Hi, i got a Asus M4A77TD Pro AMD 770 motherboard which supports 4x DDR3 DIMM 1800(OC) / 1600(OC) / 1333 / 1066 (Max. 16GB) and i was wondering if i could get a Geil Ultra Series 4GB (2x2GB) PC3-17000 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit with it asthe ram runs at 2133MHz as the motherboard supports 1800(OC) / 1600(OC) / 1333 / 1066.

Does the ram simply decrease its speed to the max speed of the motherbards ?

Cheers

Hi there, Welcome to the forums :D

I'm pretty sure the RAM speed is not automatically applied - it needs to chosen in the BIOS, unless you want to run it at default speed (likely 1066MHz).

With this in mind, the 2133MHz RAM speed is the maximum that it will run at. If the motherboard cannot achieve this speed then you will be purely limited by the motherboard - so expect to be hitting 1800MHz max. However, this is quite a speed for an AM3 system and any more would not yield you any more performance.

Thanks :) and thanks for the quick reply. So this ram should work but i will have to change the bios setting for it to be the fastest it can be 1800MHz due to the limitation of the motherboard.
