I have a 5770 being delivered tomorrow and I was wondering if it is necessary to disable my on-board graphics before/after installing it?

Yes disable before installing the new card, you will notice a big jump in performance with the 5770 from onboard graphics. I cringe when i hear of onboard graphics. :)
