say you broke your leg and needed an operation to fix it e.g. steel pins being put in.

how long is it normal to wait for. im on day 3 so far for my broken arm. not asking for medical advice just wondered if its normal to wait this long with nothing more thana drip and 1 snack each day. i have to fast most of day

Why can you only eat so little?

not allowed any food for around 10 hours before an op.....i dont have an exact time for my op because its busy so each day i start of in hope of an earlyish op so i can recover eat and go home. im given a sandwich around 9pm when they decide they cant op on me today...start fasting again 5am next day

The main reason is to stop you feeling sick when the anasthetic takes affect on you.

I know its very little to eat, but you will feel much better having not eaten after you wake up from your op

That seems a bit long. They could be waiting for the surgeon and to fit you into the operating queue. I would be asking why there was a delay. My wife fractured her wrist on a Monday morning and she had an operation on the Tuesday morning to reset the bones. But that was not on the NHS.

^^ yeah i understand and appreciate that its the waiting and not knowing whats going on that is bothering me.

Also, your delays are mostly down to the elderly. They're like a ****ing plague of locusts, feeding off the healthcare system and giving the entire service a bad name. We could do much more to prevent people from dying who should be alive if we didn't waste so much keeping people alive when they should have died a long time ago.

theres only 2 active theatres on at weekends to be shared by all the departments. i was admitted thursday afternoon left that evening to grab stuff for stayover on friday as it didnt look like i could get treatment on thursday. i was no 7 on the list originally in terms of priority

Those theatres will be used for urgent cases as it’s the weekend so it will most probably be Monday or Tuesday for you. I hope you’ve got lots to read and listen to. Try and keep cheerful. You've always got GD to give you a laugh. :)

No the main reason is so your stomach is empty when they put you out, else you might regurgitate food, inhale said food and end up needing a nice lung op to go along with your broken arm op.

It sounds like they have you tacked on as an extra to a surgical list, each day so far they have overrun, and not had time to do you, so they keep bringing you back. Eventually they will have time within a surgical session and get the op done.

Thats why they have fasted you each day.

i broke my ankle and had steel pins put in place, i was in hospital for five days and had my op on the third day.

yeah... i dont mind waiting too much. just get jealous when its feeding time for everyone else in ward. if im not in theatre bef 6 ill have to head home tbh and come back 8am tomorrow. note thats when ill decide to head off. prolly wont get away till 8pm.

free internet but with a crippling patientline keypad thingy.

Well got done on saturday 6pm. was pretty much out of it consciousness wise till midnight (slow recovery i guess...for some reason my legs were shaking like mad in the recovery room had to wait till they calmed down) so got discharged this morning. felt tons better. Range of motion in fingers aint good considering it was my wrist which was broken and my knuckle bones seem to have turned to mush!. They did give me lots of free painkillers to take away. :)

Are you in a lot of pain when you wake up from anaesthetic? I mean, you're obviously going to be groggy, but do you wake up and suddenly get hit with the pain of having been operated on too?

When i broke my ankle and needed an operation to pin it i believe i waited 3 days. I think i even went home for 2 days as there was no need for me to wait in the hospital.

No morphine is your friend :) i was in more pain before the op but then wasnt really on any drugs.

How are you this evening, I presume that you won't be doing much for a week or so?

yeah woke up from the pain. If it wasnt so painful every time i move or twitch my arm i'd prolly go to work. Its deceptive as i felt fine leaving hospital..now that the post-op medication has worn off its back with a vengeance:(. Apparently the pain is a sign its healing wooo. i get a proper cast end of next week.
