Bear with me here as I'm very green when it comes to these matters. As some of you may have seen in my other thread here I've just bought a new Sony 55' LED.

I'm looking at the best ways to stream movies from my PC. Obviously I can throw my stuff on a USB and plug it in. However, I'm curious whether it'll be possible to jazz it up a bit and create something of a UI for these movie menus. Probably unnecessary as the USB will work perfectly well, but since I've shot out a good chunk of money for this, I'd like to give it a go. I could run XBMC but my PC is too far away from the TV. I doubt streaming 1080p wireless across two floor would work. Could buy a HTPC but I was wondering if there are an easier way?

Is it a smart TV?

If so install serviio on your PC and then just connect to it under the connected devices menu. Simples.

Most 1080p is fine over wireless, depends on bitrate.

Thanks for responding Skyfall. Yes, Smart TV, 2013 model.

I'll have a look at Serviio now. Would it make a difference if my PC and router are on another floor? I can't think 1080p running too well with that but I'll have a look.

There's no way I can answer that, it really depends on what your wireless signal is like. Youll just have to try it. If wireless does not work you could try some powerline adapters between the TV and the router but they are very much like wireless and could be better or worse.

I've just installed Plex and it looks pretty damn nifty.

It's probably HTPC time as I strongly doubt it's viable to stream over Wifi.
