If I had a PS3 with no working drive and took the drive out and put it in a ps3 with a working drive (to say install play tv software), would I then just be able to swap that hard drive back into the first ps3 and all will work ok?

That's a pity

Was going to get a cheap ps3 without a working drive and use it just for Freeview and streaming, but won't have any way of installing the software :(

PS - did see your reply last night just after you posted it - so you saved me from wasting money :)

Would a PS3 recognise a usb dvd-rom drive to intall the software from, or could you copy the install data to a flash drive?

I really have no idea. I should have a play tv adapter thing arriving today and I will see what I can do without resorting to the disc. Though I am pretty sure I will have little luck.

It's just that I don't want to fork out for a brand new, full price PS3 when it isn't going to be used for gaming or for Blu-rays. I already have a PS3 and Bluray player.

Would likely turn out cheaer setting up a cheap htpc. I just wanted the simplicity of the PS3, without having to much about configuring things. Sure, I'd enoy setting up the HTPC, but I know me and it would give me sleepless nights until it was running perfectly.
