Quick Sandybridge chipset Qs

To answer my own question, noticed this on Anandtech:

There’s just one hangup to all of this Quick Sync greatness: it only works if the processor’s GPU is enabled. In other words, on a desktop with a single monitor connected to a discrete GPU, you can’t use Quick Sync.

What kind of pathetic rubbish is this Intel? The vast majority of users for whom the Quick Sync stuff will be of interest will be using discrete graphics cards, not the built-in GPU.

Hopeless.
 
I believe there's a software solution from lucid which allows you to use the quick sync with a discrete graphics card, though you need to connect the monitor to the motherboard directly. Some performance hit from diverting the images through the motherboard, but hopefully not too much.
