hi,

have recently purchased a HP procurve 1410 8 port switch to add to my netgear dg834.

atm i have the setup as Router > Switch > File Server
...................................| | > Backup server
...................................| Family Pc > Main Pc
...................................Laptop

Now so far ive used a CAT 6 cable to connect the switch to the router and everything off the swicth (the family pc and laptop are wireless)

i read somewhere that if you connect a second (or third) cable between the router and switch you can improve bandwidth. is this true?

i have tried it but when i connect the second cable all the PC's go to local area network only?

is there a way round this or will it just not work?

cheers

On some managed switches you can have two links for example, but it won't work on normal ones, it will just get stuck in a loop.

ok...., so instead, my pc and the server have dual ports, could i have one from the server and my pc going to the switch and then one direct between my computer and the server?

thanks again

No, but you could have two going from the PC and Server to the switch (i.e. using 4 ports on the switch), but the increased speed would depend on how good the switch is.

Why not just have one cable going from each device into the switch? Gigabit is going to be quick anyway.
