Quick Windows 8 question

I have a Win 8 Pro cd key and wanted to do a fresh install so downloaded Windows 8 and it's installed.

Now i'm progressing to Win 8.1 however just wanted to check as couldn't remember, does installing 8.1 class as a new install and 'format' the system?

Or is it like SP1 on Win 7?

8.1 won't format the system.

I installed 8.1 fresh using the placeholder key then changed keys to my 8 key. Worked a charm and a lovely clean install

Don't bother installing Windows 8 if you're only going to upgrade to Windows 8.1, you can just go straight to Windows 8.1.

It will save you time.
