If a subwoofer has an RMS power figure of 150 Watts, realistically what is the peak power output likely to be?

Probably around 300W but can vary.

I don't understand it though. A mate has one of those Logitech 5.1 setups which apparently is 505w RMS. I have a 150W RMS subwoofer and two speakers being driven at 80W/channel. My system completely and utterly blows it out the water, in fact I don't know how anyone could possibly want anything louder in a bedroom. It goes insanely loud with absolutely no distortion whatsoever. Yet "on paper" my system is inferior at only 310W RMS total power.

Can anyone explain?

The amount of power isn't proportional to the volume. Loads of other things effect it too.

Multiply by square root of the 2 to get the peak power.
