I really hate Quicktime and have no intention of using it, but have to have it installed to run Itunes (no suggestions of switching from ITunes thanks)

Since I've formatted my HD and re-installed everything I cannot view a movie file that is on a webpage without it launching it in a Quicktime browser, and even if I run MSCONFIG and take QTASK out of the startup programs it continues to put it back after the next reboot!

I'd just like it to launch streaming videos in Media Player as before, I've check the Quicktime preferences and removed all the file associations for it, so it now can only play QMOV's and also disabled it from the system tray but no avail!

Any suggestions as this is driving me nuts!

Even better- use regedit, using hijackthis to remove startup entries is analogous to using a spanner to hammer nails in.

start, run, regedt32

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run

Delete the entries for Quicktime Task and Itunes helper.

Also have a look in HKCU at the same location in the registry tree just to be sure.

And bask in the warm fuzzy glow of removing startup items and learning about the inner working of your computers OS at the same time :)

What you can do to stop iTunes installing Quicktime is to extract the iTunes.exe file and delete the QuicktimeInstaller.exe and then run the iTunes.exe which will run the iTunes installer but since the QT installer is missing from the folder, iTunes won't install QT.

Itunes and Quicktime are like viruses, use up loads of rescources, are impossible to get rid of, and are just a bad program all round.
Yep. I just installed iTunes last night to mess around with the new series of the Ricky Gervais Show podcast. I couldn't believe how unresponsive my 3700SD went when I ran iTunes. I don't mind Quicktime too much, I have downloaded the Quicktime Alternative as well as the Real Alternative. I've just never gotten round to using QT Alternative yet.

OK got it. Thanks for the suggestions guys but I found out the "soft" work around :D

For anyone who has the same problem in future, when Quicktime runs a movie through your browser simply right click on the page and select MIME settings, and then you can de-select all the associated files, bloody stupid program needing to do it in the preferences and there as well, but at least its sorted now ;)
