Hi,

I'm putting together a machine after my last machine exploded (for the 2nd time thanks Antech PSU!).

However in the mean time I have been using an ITX machine which is great because it's so quiet.

Time has come to build the new machine, and I'd like a graphics card that's fairly powerful (can render say Starcraft II @ 1920x1600 at full detail & framerate) but is also quiet.

I'd be looking to spend about £200-250, does anyone have any recommendations?

I don't think he would have sought help in this section if it wasn't budgeted for the graphics only though :confused:

OP, if you haven't built the machine yet and you're going to order parts available at OcUK, give me your budget and I'll spec you a whole lot :)

what about a GTX 460 plus WC? might go a bit over £250 though but would be a bit quieter and cooler
 
My total budget is about £1000, but ideally I'd like to do it a little cheaper. From browsing the OC website I've managed to spec out the following.

Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) - OEM £217.36

So far this comes in at £952 (inc VAT).

I think this should be a really good machine, however I really want to emphasize that a quiet pc is really important, which is why I haven't yet decided on a cpu cooling solution. Any help there would be appreciated.


Sorry if this is off topic for the graphics card section, hope no-one minds, I'm just grateful someone has offered to help.

Thanks HW91 that's really good, I'm totally sold on the case.

However the graphics card is a problem, I really want to stick with nvidia as I'm also interested in cuda. I take it the silverstone would support the 460?

In addition when my last pc blew up it took the samsung drives with it, I really don't want samsung drives again so I'd probably stick with the barracuda.

Thats a really nice system though, pretty much what I'm after, small quiet yet powerful.

you could use the 460 yes, just put in the 5870 because the GTX 470 is rather loud

Samsung drives are better now plus Seagate has had a rough time in recent years, maybe go for the Hitachi or Western Digital instead
 
If I was to go for a midi tower like in my original spec, do you know how quiet the coolermaster case is? It claims to have some kind of insulation and sound proofing.

Having had a coolermaster case in the past I really like their build quality and design.

Total build cost with two graphics cards in SLI. Ditch one and it comes to less than £1000. You could always spend OVER 9000 on a PC if you want to. Forgot to add, this build will be quiet.

A really nice case, I don't think I'd go for the SLI option though.

I really like HW91's cooling solution : Scythe Shuriken BIG Quiet Low Profile CPU Cooler. I imagine this would be more than enough to cool the cpu in your spec? (As I'm unlikely to overclock).

well I picked the cooler to go with the case

if you used a midi case you could go with almost any cooler
