Quiet but effective fans

Hey guys,

I'm looking for some case fans (120mm + 200mm) to replace my current ones as they are a little loud. I'm also looking for a new 120mm fan to mount onto my thermalright extreme.

What would you recommend for decent - but quiet fans?

Cheers

Case fans consider scythe slipstream
For mounting on the sink consider scythe kaze jyuni (unless very low rpm and then consider scythe s-flex)

For cost/performance/noise nothing beats a yate loon.

No idea about 200mm fans (you could just volt-mod the existing one maybe?)

Not when Yateloons are half the price and much better

Hey PinkFloyd , I have heard this Yate Loon name a lot on the forums but never had a chance to use any of them, the price looks good but it says they are 4-pin? I'm assuming that means Molex 4-Pin and not PWM 4-Pin in which case they don't seem as appealing?

Maybe mod them to run quieter or consider the 120mm Sharkoon Silent Eagle 1000's or the 2000's if you have a fan controller. . .

I didn't have any problems with the AKASA Amber 120mm myself, pretty quiet and they shift a good amount of air turning at 1500rpms however the price of this fan has flown up recently? they used to cost £7.00?

£11.74 inc VAT - Out of Stock

Having used AKASA fans for a while and fancied a change so after reading good reviews I started buying SHARKOON Silent Eagle Fans (the golf ball ones). A 120mm Sharkoon Silent Eagle 1000 slapped on a TRUE is pretty good and very quiet, they also come with rubber mounts and the cable is sheathed, nice extras!

Above: 120mm Sharkoon SE2000, very powerful but far too loud at full 2000rpm whack but great with Fan controller.

Above: Sharkoon SE1000 *blue* Edition cooling a TRU, very quiet, very LAS VEGAS Strip lol!

I would be interested to hear what people have to say about the other fans and maybe include pictures too? I would never pay more than £10 for a 120mm fan myself, especially as I use 5 or 6 of them!

Ball bearings tend to be louder. Yate Loon do all kinds of fans, ball bearings included.

The ones generally on sale (sl-12) are slow speed sleave bearings. Ball bearings can be quieter when the fan is mounted horrisontally rather than virtically.

Does it matter if they're some of the quietest fans around what bearings they use? I couldn't care less as long as it performs.

I've got the SL's, they have both a 3pin motherboard header connection aswell as 4 pin molex.

The SLs can be had for £4 including VAT if you know where to look.

Bearing type effects noise, efficency, lifespan and which mounting positions are practical.

That said - if someone presents to me a fan that is versitle, silent and pushes a lot of air my first question is not going to be "what bearing does it use", it's going to be "how much, and how many can you get to me by tomorrow?"

These new Akasa ones seem to have it all. Low price. Good airflow and truely silent.

Anybody used them yet?

Truly silent? Just because the specs say they are doesn't mean they will be :)

At 1400rpm, 50 more than the Yate Loon there is no way they will actually be 10db quieter than the Yate.

Personally I would look for the Nexus 120mm fans, they're based on Yate Loons but running at 9-10v and 1000rpm. They're quieter without compromising too much on airflow, only about £1 more, come with rubber mounts and the black/white ones look a lot better.

Its true!

The problem here is the specs from the manufacturers can sometimes be innacurate, the other problem is that loudness is subjective, what may be quiet to one poster could be noisy to another.

The only way to be really sure is to buy the fan and test it or read a specialist geeky website like SilentPC Reviews

Yes silent :)

This is a quote from one review I found;

The AK-191-SM manages very good airflow, especially when you consider, and this is a crucial point for modern system builders, that the fan is silent. Not near-silent, completely silent
