I'm not happy.
Today everything was going all nice system running as normal, I go to the shop to pick up some milk, I get back and my computer was off, hmm I thought, so I switched it back on and my H80i started making noises it's never made before, some kind of rattling/buzzing/grinding, its not loud per-say but I can hear it. Tried everything to get it to go away but no luck, opened up an RMA with corsair and they can replace the cooler as its "faulty" but it will cost me money to send to there which I am reluctant to do.

Anyway life story over, my h80i has died and I need a new cooler, I had a Artic Freezer 7 pro Rev 2 before the h80i which was good enough but I could still hear it....
Looking for the quietest I can get, any suggestions? nothing silly like the massive noctua one, just a cheap and cheerful quiet cooler that I can set to a low speed and not hear it.
Quietness is key btw.

Also which thermal compound if the cooler's suggested don't come with paste pre-applied.

Thanks

Thinking about just getting a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO which according to reviews is one the quietest and best coolers for the price, can't get it on OcUK Tho....

Not too bothered about not having the same cooling performance.
I'm after quiet operation over everything else, my h80i atm is the loudest thing in my system atm with it being "faulty", its not even loud but I can hear it over everything else even my GPU which is locked at a low fan speed for silenc.
Price range....errr cheapest possible would be my answer :P erm....anything below £30 I guess, I have no need for any of the beefy over the top coolers, just something that is as quite as possible.
Case is a Fractal Design Midi R2, so airflow is no issue.
Already looked at the Alpenfohn but according to reviews its louder than the 212 evo (which is apparently totally silent at the lowest RPM), was going to get the 212 evo before I won the h80i in a competition :D but I dunno if there are better options.

shame you have no MM access, you could buy my Black Megahalems. been trying to get rid for a bit now.

couple it with a couple of akasa apache pwm fans and your set for silent performance.

with cooling your best bet is bigger is better. a bigger heatsink will allow for lower rpm fans to get rid of heat, so it will be quieter.

I have a Megahalems with 2x apache fans, it's very effective and silent! However, regarding the OP, I'd probably try and get a get a heatsink cooler and then fit a silent fan to it.
