Always been a seagate fanboy due to reliability and lack of noise but recently there has been talk of new 'gates being hit and miss. Can anyone suggest some quiet drives? im hearing good things about the samsungs.

Samsungs are generally noted for being pretty quiet, if it is particularly important then you might be as well getting a Silentmaxx enclosure or similar as that will reduce almost any drive to near inaudiability.
