Hi there,

I've been trying to find some information on quiet HDD's for a build im planning.

From what ive seen I get the impression the Samsung F4 would be my best option but im not sure if this is uptodate.

I would use this harddrive to store lots of media for Maya and photoshop etc. as well as running programs and games off. I was thinking about the WD black but its far more expensive and can be much noisier?

You'll need to remove the competitor link matey.

I can't comment on the quietness of a particular drive, but suspending the drive with elastic or even adding foam buffers so that it isnt directly clipped into anything helps reduce noise an awful lot because most of the vibration usually spread throughout the case is stopped.

I bought two WD Black's last year and both got sent back because of their noise. A 5400rpm is probably your best bet for quietest though, and new ones are exceptionally fast. I don't know any to reccomend though but I have heard bad things with the WD green and gaming as it seems to be soley aimed at data storage and can cause some judder in games apparently. Maybe fixed in newer revisions?

I have a 2TB Seagate SSHD as my data drive and up to yesterday it was mounted on a rubber mat in the 5.25" bays and it there was no difference in noise between seek and idle which I was extremely surprised by. I bought a Smart Drive Classic today though and now the drive is inaudible 100% unless I put my ear 1 inch away. These can be bought for about £60 if you're as obsessed with noise as I am!

yes Samsung f4!!!

the Seagate hybrid drives might be worth a look, part ssd so they don't write to the hdd so much
