Quiet PC build can anyone advise?

I've got a 500gb Samsung Spinpoint in my Media Centre... it's absolutely silent, can't here it at all.

Also got a 120gb drive in my machine at work, it's not as quiet as my new 500gb drive but still pretty damn quiet.

Only makes a noise at full pelt really.

I've found Samsung much quieter than Seagate to be honest. (I have a 120gb Barracuda in main pc - it's quiet, but not as much as the spinpoint in the media centre)

I've also put a Samsung Spinpoint 7200 rpm in my Sky+ box as well as using one in my PC. Now if you read up on upgrading the Sky+ from the 5400 rpm Maxtor the recommendation is that one uses a special CE Drive as they are designed to be quiet and not use a standard PC drive. However, the Spinpoint is absolutely silent, in fact I would say that it is quieter than the original Maxtor drive.

Back to the subject of CPU fan/heatsink replacements. If I replace the stock Intel one that sits on top of the CPU how do you secure these replacement drives. Some of the heatsinks look enormous whereas the current on sits neatly in position while two lever type clips keep it secured.

The only times the drives are noisy in my current PC is as you say when Vista is employing super fetch which is only a minor short term irritant
 
The larger cpu heatsinks use backplates which are screwed in at the backside of the motherboard to secure them in place.

Ah now I see - as they say a pictures worth a thousand words, bit of a chore though having to dismantle half your PC. I take it there are some pre-screwed holes for the base plate are there?
 
Its not as daunting as it looks :D
Sure its a bit of a nuisance taking things apart to fit the bigger cpu heatsinks but its easy enough to do and how often do people really need to change them? Not very often for most people out there.
Their will be pre-screwed holes yep.
Take a look here at the manual of the Ultra-120 heatsink to see it better explained.
 
i've installed a couple of hundred samsung spinpoints over the years and only ever found one noisy one that turned out to be faulty. all of them were whisper quiet. I've just got a 500gb oneand my friend is getting a barracuda 500gb so we'll do comparisons :)

If you haven't already made your mind up, I'm sure if you post your budget that you'd like to spend we'll be able to spec a quiet PC :)

Krooton has the right idea though... it's very close between seagate and samsung HDDs, personally I'd go for samsung drives as I find them quieter - they're very similar noise wise though (both very quiet!)

Around the £650 mark give or take - tower only i.e. no monitor, speakers etc. etc. N.B. gaming is definitely not my thing so shouldn't feature in specs.
