Hello! I was wondering whether anyone could recommend a quiet 500W PSU for below £50? At the moment I'm using a Corsair 520W which isn't that loud, but after turning off all other fans in the case it's definitely the loudest thing in it.
Youre not going to get better (quieter) without spending dbl that tbh, the Corsair is v good and quiet PSU, If it needs replacing then for that budget you can look at the BeQuiet PurePower L7 530W at that budget, prob similar to the Corsair you have, but if the Corsair is working and you just want less noise then you either need to fork out big bucks for a fanless PSU or you could try changing the fan within your PSU if youre comfortable doing this
You don't need a fanless psu - they are silly money (only silent nuts like me have one on this forum).
The seasonic X-560 / Nesteq ASM X-Zero both have a semi fanless design.
Aka the fan is off at loads up to 40% or so (200w)
The Scythe Stronger is also a possable as it has a undervolted slipstream fan in it which is reasonable quiet, not much more that the Corsair but a little
You may find that a psu gasket (£5) with reduce the fan noise.
Or swap out the Corsair fan if you are electrically minded as 95thrifles said above
(please don't open a psu if you have no electrical knowlage)
Some cases are better that others too - ideally a 'quite' case should have only two holes in it
(both with no line of sight to your ears) and a door to cover the drive bays
I must ask why you need a 500w psu if you can turn off all the fans and it still works.
A passive cpu heatsink and a passive graphic card usually me a low wattage pc?
A single fan pc is imho the best near silent option (either psu fan or case fan)
I use just a case fan (NoiseBlocker MF12-S2) as I have a fanless psu
I took the fan out of my psu and remounted it using silicon pins, without the wire guard. I recommend against this course of action, it isn't noticeably quieter and it hurts when you miss the power switch.
Opening a psu with no electrical knowledge leads to electric shocks, which haven't killed me yet, but might next time. Not advised.
zalman heatpipe cooled psus. Most silent component in my case (all my fans are noctuas which are VERY silent and one akasa apache, plus case fans turned to low.)
The coolermaster silent pro range are very good - can't hear it at all over my case fans, can't say how much a 500w version would be, but probably a bit over budget for you.
@95thrifles
I took a look at the Be Quiet 530W on Youtube, it seemed silent so I am leaning towards buying one given its price. Something that worries me is the OcUK description suggesting it's only for "light gaming".
@shadowscotland
I'm using an Antec P180 case, which is supposed to suppress noise quite well. In total there are 6 fans in the case, 5 of them 12cm, the other being the graphics card. I gathered fanless PSUs were quite expensive so they aren't an option for me at the moment.
