Quietening PC

But the main one seems to be my PC is quieted with the side off, and more vibrations when its on. I've got the Akasa Eclipse case.

when you put the case side on make sure its screwed down tight, when its powered up and noise place ya hand on the middle of the case side see if that stops it, might be the aluminium flexing with vibration.

main game then is to stop the vibrations (usually you're hard drives) reaching the case side, suggested drive suspension will help with that.

other option is to get some thing like the rubber door draft excluder and fit it around the edge of the case where the case side touches it.

My advise is don't bother with PaxMate - only one of those products that makes a real difference is acustipack and even that's not great as the sound tends to escape out of the big holes in your case where the fans are.

That drive enclosure will not decrease noise. Consider Scythe quietdrive if you want to use an enclosure to reduce noise. Bungy cord suspension as an alternative to enclosures is an effective and cheap solution. The main cause of noise from drives is the vibrations transfered to the case. Can't link due to competitor links on the page but there is a good artical on hard drive suspension on SPCR.

Your choice of fan is good. Your choice of heatsinks are good.

The case may make some difference but probably not enough to justify the expense.

Thx some good info there

Im still gonna get some acustipack foam even if its a little ill take it + wanna see if I can really dampen the noise, they scythe silent box is pretty good cut out the noise almost completly couldnt hear the grinding/accessing noise once it was in but I found the hdd got too hot and unstable (samsung 500gigger) gonna try the japanese gup which is 46 quid from ocuk there apparantly the best ones going :)

Sounds good. As a temp measure for the enclosure you could try spreading some thermal paste (just a little and be careful not to get it near the breather hole) on the top of your disk where it presses against the heatpipe.

I only suggest this as there was a dude a long time ago (before enclosures) who used rubber boxes he cut himself and using thermal paste dropped his temps by like 20C. I don't imagine it will have the same effect but maybe it's worth a try?

Edit:// It was in Leo Quan's Quiet MP Dual-CPU Workstation build - right at the end of his log (can't link due to competitor links on site)

Edit #2:// Scythe might also be interested to hear from you if their product fails to cool your drive. It's certified for drives up to 10000rpm IIRC. Maybe they'll send you something free or fix it if it's broken. Just read you used a silentbox - consider quietdrive (this is the newer one and has a heatlane) if you want to use Scythe still.
