I'm in the market for a large capacity IDE drive (300gb - 400gb). Silence is more important than speed, price or capacity (may even consider a 250gb if it's the quietest). Can anyone make any recommendations?

Thanks.

also interested in this. Looking for a 200Gb - 300Gb hard disk, probably IDE which is quiet. Any more recommendations?

My Samsung SpinPoint 300GBs are pretty quiet - one is in an external enclosure backing up my media center and is still pretty quiet. Seeks seem a bit quieter than the WD 300 in my mate's PC.

That's interestng to know. I've heard good things about the Spinpoints and this will indeed be in an external enclosure.

Western Digital make the quietest drives in my personal experience.

They generally are very reliable to. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/WesternDigital_IDE.html

I must admit that all the WD's I've had have been quite noisy. Fast. But a little "whiney". Although it's been a while since I bought one so maybe I should give one a try.

Spinpoint's are generally regarded as some the quietest drives available. There may be quieter drives (and I'm sure there are), but Spinpoints are definately "up there".

This is not personal experience I should add -- just what I've read.

For a while i have used nothing but samsungs and have have found them to be really quiet and reliable, but i bought a western digi 250gig sata with 16mb cache and am pretty impressed with how quiet it is,its deffo close between the 2 brands.

Inside my PC I'm currently running a couple of WD 250GB SATA2 drives and they are great - really not making much noise at all.

Today we took delivery of a 250GB Samsung drive to fit inside the Enermax Laureate external drive enclosure we also ordered.
This drive really is near silent.
If it wasn't for the blue LED on the front of this thing we wouldn't even know it was doing anything.

I'm happy with the WD's in my machine, but if I'd wanted silence or really, really quiet right now I think I'd probably buy Samsung going on this drive we've got.

I have two Samsung SpinPoint 80GB drives and they are quiet, they could be even be more quiet if i enabled the AAM on the drives, this is what i plan to be doing for my upgrade on the HTPC, with larger Samsung sized drives.

Loving my Samsung HD400LD :D

Please stop tempting me. I'm really trying to not spend quite so much. The 300gb looks so much better value. But I just know a time will come when I'm short of the odd gb or two :)
