Ok Guys & Gals,

almost there with having a nice silent PC, 7v'd my ambers and big typhoon, bungeed my hard drive, now all thats left is the x1800xt fan! if i was to buy the zalman would i notice a considerable change in noise when idling?

I have tried ati tool to change the fan speed but just gets too hot so the fan keeps coming on and off every few seconds.

Also i have a Sonata2 case, great case, however feel that the cooling element of it lets it down considerably, just wondering if i was to mod the case, adding a few more fans on the sides would this make the case more noisy, even with having 5 / 7v'd fans?

Thanks :)

Hi GinG,

At last, someone else who is obsessed with quietness!

Although older, I mounted a Zalman VF700 flower cooler to a 9800PRO and noticed a massive drop in temperature when compared to the stock cooler. This overhead allowed me to turn the fan down to near silence. I wouldn't hesitate in fitting a Zalman flower cooler, I believe the VF900 is the correct fitment for your card. However, the flower coolers are quiet large, you may want to check your case can accomodate the cooler.

If it is necessary to fit more fans, then the larger the better, as you probably know already! In particular, 120mm fans are nearly silent when turned down. I would also recommend the Zalman Fanmate, as these allow you to adjust you fans more effectively and are very cheap.

Quietly does it,

Michael

ah sweet, yeah im wanting it as silent as i can get it, basically couldnt sleep with my old computer when it was on, mainly the noise but also was like blackpool illuminations :P

im thinking of getting a zalman, just need to wait till payday again! will loose the rear exhaust of it though. will have to mod the case in time when i get a bit of confidence up!!!

Thanks for your input!

I've quietened my PC to a level that I can barely hear it. The GFX card fan is the noisiest component in the PC and is the first one that should be changed. There are 2 good replacement options, one is the Zalman VF900 (and it's family) and the second is the Arctic Cooling Silencers. I went for the Arctic cooling because it exhausts the hot air to the outside of the case this way keeping the inside of the case cooler. Both are very quiet at idle but at load they will get noisier.

Wow your tagan must be very quiet to not hear it over the graphics card ! I can hear my seasonic S12 over the VF900 when its on its slowest setting...

What else have you done to make your pc so quiet? What sort of temps are you running ???

The Tagan is actually the noisiest component of the PC especially that it was one of the very first ones and it developed this ticking noises. I'm planning on changing it to a modular seasonic.
The PC case is the Lian Li V1000+ which is very well made so there are no vibrating panels. The mobo is Asus A8N32-sli which has passively cooled chipset so this eliminates the small noisy fan. Changed the stock CPU cooler to Zalman 9500 which at idle runs at 40% speed. Changes GFX fan to Acrtic cooling silencer, changed case fans to 2 Akasa ambers which run at 50% also attached them with rubber pegs to stop vibrations, modded the HDD cage so that the 3 hard drives are soft mounted and do not cause vibrations. I've turned on Cool & Quiet and also use SpeedFan to control the speed of CPU and case fans.

The 3 hard drives are 'noisy' but I do not want to silence them by placing them in some boxes as this would increase their temperature and shorten life.

Have you tried to RMA the Tagan? They recognise the ticking as faulty and should still replace it if its still within the warranty period.
