QVL for SSD NVMe?

Just saw that the 4tb ssd nvme drive I bought for my new build isn't on my motherboard's storage qvl, 2tb ver. is but not 4tb. What problems will this cause and why does such a list even exist? How can storage drive not work with a motherboard? I've never heard of such a thing.

The list exists so you have a reference of what parts are tested and confirmed to work by the motherboard manufacturer, if you go away from the list they could easily say they aren't prepared to help if you approach them for support.

I wouldn't worry about it for a 4tb vs 2tb and I've only ever used QVL for RAM personally (and not always bothered).

If the 2TB version is on the QVL and the 4TB isn't, you're probably fine, since they usually have the same parts.

The only potential concern I can think of, is that a 4TB M.2 drive might be double sided and the 2TB M.2 drive single sided and in some cases this is not supported by the M.2 slot. I'd say that's rarer than it will fit and be fine.

There are also some SSD models that did not even have a 4TB version when released, so it would not have been tested when the board was manufactured.

In terms of: does the QVL matter? For the most part: no, but incompatibility is possible. ASRock have published a list for some of their boards about a pin definition issue, but I don't think that applies to their latest ones.

The old 2.5" SATA drives should have no problem in any event.

I don't even bother checking QVL for RAM... as long as you are sensible with specs and timings and they are Vis-à-vis in line with the motherboard specs/capabilities, I don't worry about it.

Never even heard of QVL for storage, is it April 1st already? :D

It can have its uses. Asustor's NVMe QVL shows which combinations of NAS and NVMe need heatsinks and the QVL for Terra-Masters F8 SSD NAS says do NOT use one particular drive. But, in general, NVMe is NVMe and whatever you choose should work.

Can't even remember the last time I bothered with a qvl for anything if I'm being honest...
