when i start the computer,i get the bios screen then it turns off after about 3seconds. When i could get in the bios the temp was reading mid 80's. the case has good airflow and am using standard intel hsf.

Any ideas guys/gals?

thanks

Could be an issue with the seating of the HSF and also too much or too little thermal compound. Have you removed the HSF, cleaned it and the CPU, then reapplied paste and reseated the HSF yet? If not I'd do that. Also make sure the fan is spinning when you boot up.

hi, yeah, i've taken it off, cleaned the hsf and cpu, reapplied the thermal paste, rotated the hsf in all directions and it stilldoesn't cool it down  could it be a dodgy hsf? all the fans spin as they should.

thanks

Put a large dollop of thermal compound in the middle of the cpu heatspreader and put the sink on, if temps fall to reasonable readings then either the heatspreader is concave or the sink is badly uneven. I've had to do this with a few core 2 cpus that i could'nt lap due to client/warranty issues. You could lap the cpu is this test method works.

when i've taken the hsf off there is a perfect circle on the cpu, so i think it does sit evenly. I just don't understand why it is taking the heat away
