R32 Alternatives

I'm sure you could find a second hand one for your budget ;)

Surprised Audi was not in that list. The thing that peed me off about Audi is the fact a TDI Sline costs £24k and a 2.0T sline special edition was something like £21k ~ they made too many -.-

I would recommend the Audi 3.2 V6 ~ ohh the noise :D

I would go for a 130i but thats me. I liked them until one day a guy put the foot to the floor and took off......that sealed the deal for me on bmws I6 engine!

The R32 certainly isnt just a cheaper gti,the R32 looks ten times better - the looks, the sound and the V6! :D

The R32 looks like sex. I parked my 1.4 Golf next to one the other day  :p

It's supposedly an incredible car to drive, and the automatic gear box is ridiculously fast as it has the next gear preselected on a separate clutch.

EVO did an interesting article on the R32 vs the 130i, and the 130i came out on top. I would probably go for the 130i if it were my choice. 260bhp (I think) + RWD = lots of fun!

265bhp, it's quicker than both the R32 and Audi A3, as well as being much cheaper to insure (for some reason the 130i comes in at a group 13 or 14, as opposed to 18). Add to that it's cheaper to buy than the Audi (slightly, although when you factor in options it'll probably be similar)...

If you can wait a bit, you could also look at the Audi S3, which is cheaper than the 3.2, better fuel economy, faster... Guess what brochure I picked up from Audi today :D

Probably because it looks soo ugly (the BM) and the rear space - sorry there is a rear?

Audi S3 for the win...but might be a little out of your price range.

Or you could get yourself a MK5 GTI and let everyone wonder why you always have a smile when you walk into work!

The S3 is actually cheaper than the 3.2... As well as cheaper to run in terms of economy etc....

I thought the latest R32 was more expensive than the GTI. It's meant to be the range topper?

It really is the only Golf I'd actually like to own

Just saw exactly the same R32 with exactly the same driver at the station 10 minutes ago. It looks very, very nice :D

Although it has to be said the paint isn't as nice as it is in that pic above.

Thanks for all the input guys, it's certainly given me a few options to think about.

Image is quite important to me too, but I may just have to bite the bullet and try a Skoda. Oh the shame of it :D

Rear space on the 130i would seem to rule it out, though I'll go down the dealers and have a bit of a poke about. Fortunately, Audi/BMW/VW/Seat are all close together in Portsmouth, so I'll probably spend Saturday wandering through the showrooms.

The thought of a skyline would make my legs wobble a bit, but 'unfortunately' it has to be a new car

Really!? I thought the S3 started at £27k before you start adding toys?

It's really close, especially if you're looking at the DSG 3.2 (the standard 3.2 is slightly cheaper, about £23.5k - 25.5k, the DSG is £26.8k) but they don't have as good a spec as the S3 (the S3 has leather etc as standard, the 3.2, even the S-line, doesn't for starters). A decent specced 3.2 is easily going to be £30k by the time you're done.

To top that off, the fuel consumption figures (31.0 vs 26mpg) and the expected depreciation (the opinion of the bloke I was discussing it with today is that the V6 was going to nosedive when the S3 becomes available) make it a very closely fought battle on the economic front.

You forgot absolutely shocking handling and horrific depreciation...

All that power is nothing without actually being able to use it.

Says who? EVO mag rate the 147GTA in their "best of the rest" section behind the Mini CooperS. Gave it 4/5 stars.

Clarkson picked it over the R32 and the FRS.

Not far off on the depriciation though ;)
