The time has come to upgrade my car ;) .

After having just seen my mates recently purchased R32, I thinking of buying the same.

Does anyone know of any common issues with the previous model version ( not the latest ) that I should be aware of ?.

Try uk-mkivs.net or r32oc.com. Either way they are great cars, not been lucky enough to own one yet but hopefully will in the near future. Don't think there is any major issues with them just try and get one that has been looked after and you should be safe.

They are pretty reliable as has been said make sure the radiator fans work on a slow speed with the aircon on, make sure the haldex that controls the 4wd is working not a common thing to fail but expensive to fix if its not working. Simple to check turn traction control off dial in 5-6k of revs and rip your foot off the clutch if you wheel spin for anymore than a split second or light up the front tyres the haldex is not working meaning the car is running in 2wd.

Other than that just make sure everything is working in the car. Personally I would keep a eye out for one with the full bucket recaros as they are simply superb to sit in and look at.

Its just the quickest way to tell if its working, I would be surprised if any R32 hasn't been launched that way at some point in its life afterall thats what the 4wd is for.

did it about 30mins ago, traction off, no wheel spin :D

but to the op, get over to www.r32oc.com, sign up and ask any questions.

Reliability -, mines done 94k :D and nothing major has gone wrong. they reckon the 3.2 vr6 is only just run in at this stage ;)

When you test drive one, you will notice there are a lot of squeeks, and rattles. DO NOT BE ALARMED, they are normal :p

if there is a rattle that sounds like a hamster wheel, that disappears when you press the clutch, thats a faulty flywheel bearing, and should be replaced under warranty.

One thing to find out is if its been on long life or normal servicing. Long life sucks, if its on it, get off it immediatly.

MAF Sensors are known to be a problem in the earlier models, can be bought aftermarket from BOSCH for around £60 and are easily replaced.

Invest in a VAG-COM cable, or know someone local that has one, its an invaluable tool.!

Anything else, you can get me over on r32oc!

Best Mk4 Golf made by miles - if you are a Golf fan it's surely the ultimate for you. Only real issue with them is the absolutely astronomical prices they still command - £15k is a hell of a lot of money for any Mk4 Golf irrespective of the specification and puts it in direct competition with a lot of cars it wouldn't have competed with when new.

It's a bit like the Focus RS in this regard.

the reason being is that there were only roughly 8000 made worldwide, 5k of which went to the states ;)
