R4800 to be released after the GT200, says Tom's

Looks like the new cards are requiring less power. Is this just for PCI-E 2.0 or does it work on the PCI-E 1.0 boards?

Only 512Mb for the 4870 (or 1Gb shared with the X2)? What an utter letdown. Hopefully the vendors will produce versions with more memory, otherwise games at top end resoultions will suffer a bottleneck with only 512Mb memory.
If Nvidia release their top GT200 cards will more than 512Mb memory as standard, AMD will not do well!

Intresting reading but is there anything 'official 'on the true GT200 specifications as to bus size and VRAM on the card and the core itself? if th rumors are ture about the gpu going 'dual core' like cpus, then iam quite intrested. Also will there only be a gtx replacement or will there e a gts too?

512MB is the reference design. Their partners are free to add as much memory as they like. 1GB versions of 38xx series exist but the performance doesnt justify the extra cost.

Dont forget that ATi's memory management is better than nVIDIAs for some reason.

From the point i was making before, basically if you consider 3870 to be a high end product then 4870 will be a high end product. In terms of pricing, i consider it to be an upper mainstream product and as 4870 will have the same pricing model as the 3870 i consider it to be an upper mainstream product!

I think ATi will do at least as well as the 38xx this time, possibly better.

it will be backwards compatible

I mean the power usage thing. I remember reading that PCI-E 2.0 has more power in the slot so less external power is needed. Just wondering if it works ok for PCI-E 1.0, meaning you dont need more than one PCI-E power connector.

Im guessing you dont cause they wouldn't make two models, one for PCI-E 2.0 with 1x6pin connector and a PCI-E 1.0 model with 2x6pin connectors or something :D

Well i have waited this long a little longer is not going to hurt any of us :). Afterall it is only time and all have time to waste otherwise we wouldn't be waiting for GAMING cards to be released :D.

Looking forward to these - might pick up either a pair of 4870 cards or an X2, depending on cost.

I'm glad I went for the HX620 when I built my rig now - looks like i'm going to be using most of it! :D

Hmm, this is dissapointing in my opinion. Seems very much like the same situation we have with the current cards, except everything will be a step higher in performance; nvidia will have the performance crown, whilst ATi play catch up, lowering prices just to stay competitive. :(

But nobody knows how either RV770 or GT200 will perform.

I still reckon there off on the days of the 4870X2 release... not unless its announced during the sametime as the 4870XT launch...

But guess that might be different if Nvidia strike 1st, either way gonna hold off my major pc build till Summer as that looks the best time to go shopping now :)

2 years, and we get 3 buses at once....oh wait....:D

its like im a kid at Xmas now.

superb play form ATI, i dont care if the performance is worse than the GTX280, if its priced competitively then im getting it, even better if the 3850 will be made by a partner with GDDR5.

i buy with my wallet not crysis in mind.

jsut one thing buggin me....can we Xfie backwards to the 3XXX series :)

and if they say the partners are choosing designs, does this mean no more slap on a sticker, and more custom designs?

i thought 4870 is 1gig ddr5 and 4870x2 2 gig ddr5 i guess ddr 5 still to expensive or something if they cutting down numbers

edit now they say :
Days before Nvidia

RV770XT with GDDR5 memory support and RV770PRO with GDDR3 support based cards will launch on June 16th, just days before Nvidia's Geforce GTX 280 product codenamed GT200.

ATI wants to spoils Nvidia's party but in the end, it will all come down to the fact which will be faster. From what we know it looks like GT200 based products should end up faster than RV770XT, but we believe that R700 with its two RV770 chips should be the real GT200 competitor.

As we said in a separate post, R700 dual chip card will launch at some point in August which gives Nvidia quite a lead.

Whats the point in making a 3850 with GDDR5?

I find it incredibly funny that a site like Fud speculates so much based on no solid evidence. Great stuff though am looking forward to the benches..
