R600 benched only 200 points more than GTX

How can it be slower, that would mean the card is horribly inefficient

I would think this is all due to a wider shader technology 128 vs 64 used by Nvidia, also worth remembering that the Shaders run at 1.35G's

its hardly fair comparing pre release cards to cards that have been out 6 months with new drivers is it.
No, thats true, cards that are 6 months old, or a half generation in graphics card terms should be considerably less powerful than a new card. If the drivers and state of the card really are that bad AMD will have to do some thinking.

i say its un true
the only time will believe it is when its out on sale and theres lots oif reviews about it

Ah well...this seems very underwhelming to be honest. I was actually looking forward to some ATI competition, but this release seems weak. I hope ATI releases something good soon, otherwise (we) the consumers could be left with only one graphics card company to choose from.

What's the cost of the card by the way?

And this is why I've been banging on for the past couple of months that bigger numbers doesn't neccesarily mean better performance.

same way a 2.1Ghz Core 2 beats a 2.2Ghz A64 by a LONG way. Architecture means a lot.

Anyway, i thought the 2900XTX had 128, not 64 shaders? The XL has 96, similar to the 8800GTS.

This all sounds the same as about 18 months ago went ATI were about 6 months late with there x1800xt card....

(When ati did actually get round to releasing there x1800xt it was very close speeds to nvidia 7800gtx which had already been released about 6 months before..)

The X1800XT and X1900XT were much better bang for buck than their Nvidia counterparts though.

Not mentioning the whole HDR+AA fiasco.

Being first isn't always being best, but in this case I think Nvidia have it in the bag.

Any piece of hardware thats delayed over and over again arouses serious suspicion.

I'll say it before and I'll say it again, I think AMD got caught with their pants down - 8800 was that big a leap forward. AMD/ATI revised the design.

Its not all good for nvidia owners either - drivers are still not up to scratch.

I think R600 will be a bit quicker, just not that much quicker. There'll be a lot more variations of the card too, and some great choices for us in the summer

To those who waited I'd agree that there still aren't any games around that really need that much power.

A new generation annoucement from Nvidia probably won't be far behind this, and we can all wait another 6 months :D

Moral of the story - never wait. Never wait for new hardware or new games. Buy now for what you need now. Worry about tomorrow when it comes.

They got pics from cebit ? then thats unlikely, as AMD/ATI pulled out of cebit .... tbh I think everything should be taken with a large pinch of salt, hopefully there will be an announcemennt after the scheduled meeting on may 31st.

@ highlander .. "And to all those folk that waited 6 months....."
ermm ... they still have money in their bank/not on their CC whichever the case may be, and still able to play the latest games without probs ;)

They can either wait it out, or buy an 8800, they haven't lost out TBH. :)

Very very true in fact im sure some 8800GTX owners here if they find the R600 is better then can always be found on the For Sales forums and good luck to them/

I highly regret not selling off my pc and getting a CD2+8800GTX back in Xmas/Jan now... In fact may still just order a GTX 768meg card since there 350 quid, if R600 prooves the better then I too can be on the For sales forums ;)

Yeah tis what im thinking it seems to be repeating itself history cos im sure that was the same case with X1800 and X1900-50, ATI got out late and only just edged it and kept refining the process before overall taking the lead in performance/IQ but not by much.

Nvidia just overpower them by releasing an actual product and on time with extreme performance.

I skipped 8800GTX, just seems so sad to go off and order an GTX right now when its perhaps 3-4 weeks away from launch...

I hope you didn't buy that to use the step-up programme, you've only got 90 days, you've missed it by years. :D

Bah you've changed it. :p

I'm not sure why people are bashing ATI / Nvidia... competition is good, if the R600 is really good, then that forces Nvidia to pull their finger out. Either way the end result is that we "the consumer" reap the benefits!
