Hopefully upgrading to a R9 280X, but doubt my 450W PSU is going to quite cut it, (also don't think it has enough power connections as I read 280X requires 1x 8 pin and 1x 6 pin connectors) after using power calculator minimum requirements showing as 457w and 507w Max.

looking at http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-153-CS

would that be ok or any other recommendations somewhere between £60-£90 area

Asus M5A97 Pro Mobo
AMD black edition FX4100 quad core 3.6ghz OC'd to 4.2ghz
1 x HDD
1 x DVDR
8gb RAM
4 x 120mm fans 1x 200mm fan
(will add an SSD for OS eventually)
and ofc the 280X

Hey Beermonster,

I've just been having the same discussion over here. Yes you're going to need at least 1x 8pin and 1x 6pin although the version I have (Vapor-X) has conflicting info. on that.

In terms of wattage I think 450W is going to be too little but having been running my PC with a power meter over the weekend it hasn't gone over 300W unless I've pushed it with FurMark burn in test - then it jumped up to 500W.

I'm running it on a 600W OCZ PSU.

would say any of

would be better than the corsairs you linked to, you'll be fine with 550w-650w for single card, 750w if you're planning on xfire.

I haven't looked through the specs for all of them but I know for sure the seasonics and the antec have the 8pin(split as 6+2) pcie connectors(so you can connect connect 6pins and have 2 pin hanging or have all 8 connected depending on the cards requirement), pretty certain the be quites will have the required pcie connectors as well.

the 24pin and 8 pin for the mobo are different connectors to the pcie and all those psus have the required connectors.

after looking a bit more i noticed http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-154-CS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=2466, at the same price as the 650 version, i'm not being dumb and missing something right? if not i guess i may as well go for the 750 version for same price

Corsair released a statement saying there's a fault with the 750 + 850w version of the RM power supply causing it to shutdown in high ambient temperatures as the fan doesn't switch on.

depending on how new (old) your psu is, and whether it can actually supply the rated 450w, you may or may not need to change your psu.
cuz the 280x max draw is 225w, and your cpu draw is 100w, that leaves you with ~100w spare capacity for the rest of your rig

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/768 <- 7970 ghz edition power draw near the bottom of the page
416w at the wall, assuming 85% efficiency = 350w supplied by the psu

my current one is Corsair VX 450W, think it is about 5-6 years old and it's has a horrible high pitch whine going on atm, it also only has 1 PCI-e 6 pin connector which isn't enough for R9 280x

It's the only part left over from my original system I bought from here around 2008/9 ish, well the PSU and the case :p
