R9 290 - Do I need a new PSU?

Maybe because the OP was questioning the use of adapters as he only has 6pins and as his current unit is 6 years old it may well be a good time to upgrade and a 10year warranty with a quality unit won't be needing replacing any time soon.
 
I was using an 850w Corsair originally but it was old and died on day 2 of owning a 290, I am now using a Akasa 650w and it has been running great.

He wouldn't need to replace a PSU with a 5 year warranty any time soon either so I don't really see the point in paying extra for a longer warranty just to end up in the same situation wanting a new GPU but having a PSU with old connectors and half decade old capacitors.

Appologies, because you had quoted the person who mistook the 5 year warranty on the 650w for being 10 years I thought you were quoting the person who said to pay the extra for the 750w to get the 10 year warranty. It looked at first glance like you were agreeing that it was worth paying more for 10 year warranty instead of 5 year warranty after earlier stating that being >5 years was grounds to consider replacing a PSU.
 
OP go for a new PSU, it is a whole lot better and cheaper than having to replace the rest of your system if anything goes wrong.

He wouldn't just be getting the extra warranty though would he. He would also get the extra 100w as already stated, and the Psu he's currently running is not 5 years old it's over 6.
