R9 290 Help! / Possible upgrade

Hey,

I bought an R9 290 about a year ago and had a few issues with it back then where it would cut out randomly and reboot the machine. The company i bought it off would not refund it as they found no fault with it. I upgraded my mobo, CPU, PSU and installed the drivers without CCC and that seemed to fix the issues and ive never had a problem since.

Now i Have upgraded to the Acer XG270HUomidpx 27" 1440p 144hz monitor and its a preety amazing monitor. Since ive started using it and playing on it the issue where it gets a black screen and reboots has came back. I also had a warning saying the Cable (display port) or GPU being used doesnt support 1440 and 144hz. I stupidly never checked the actual supported resolutions and refresh rate for the CPU but noticed quite a few people had no problems with it.

Ive updated GPU and bios. I've tried different settings and the only thing that works without a crash is 1440p and 60hz which is unbearable after using 120 for so long.

Does anyone have any advice on getting this running smoothly? Also, I'd prefer not to have to upgrade more parts if possible as most of the PC is less than a year old so where would i stand in possibly returning the monitor to OCuk if i cant get it working as wanted.

Sorry to be a pain and any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
John

p.s. willing to consider upgrades if its a possible faulty card. Would AMD be better with the freesync option or would you recommend a top end Nvidia?

Sounds like its too much stress on the GPU since your stable when you lock it down to 60 fps. Its easy to test, just crank up the settings VSR/MSAA to drop your fps below 60 and if it starts crashing then maybe its heat or power related.

Since you replaced your PSU i would go with heat and check its not overheating first.

I thought it was down to overheating but now im not so sure.

I had speed fan on while watching a stream of a game on 144hz. The temp was around 55 degrees. and then the screen was flickering black and getting weird patterns.

Ive put it onto 60hz and the temp is the same but theres no flickering.

Long shot, but have you always used the same DisplayPort cable to this point? Just wondering if maybe the cable has an issue passing enough data for 1440p\144Hz but is fine for lower amounts?

Few years back I had flickering issues on a cheap monitor no matter what device I hooked it up to. Ended up swapping the monitor out under warranty only to find it was the 5m VGA cable I was using! Swapped to a better quality cable and all was fine. I realise VGA & DP are very different cable types and specifications, but just thought it might be worth an ask.

First time using it too be honest, it was just the standard one that came in the box. Ive always used DVI before. 60+ hz wasnt showing up with the DVI although 120 was on previous monitor. I may purchase one to see if its that.

Scratch that. 100% fan speed and hitting 93 degreees on 1080p and 144hz.

Seems like somethings messed up...

Unfortunately no i got it from somewhere else which they deleted my account as they wouldn't refund it due to 'not having a fault'.

Does anyone know if MSI mind repasting the cards?

Just found this:

This question has popped up quite a few times over on the OC3D MSI sub-forum.

To be clear to those people wanting to install a GPU Waterblock on their MSI Graphics Cards...

In the EU (UK incl) if you install a Waterblock it will NOT void your warranty so long as you don't damage the Cooler or PCB in any way.

I would suggest to keep the cooler (and screws used) kept safe somewhere if you ever wanted to RMA the card to us or the place of purchase to keep your warranty intact.

An hour has passed and played 2 full games on CS on 1440p 144hz and full ultra settings. staying at 80 most of the time and peaking at 86. No crashes or black screens. Im happpy with that for now!

might want to check the VRM temps. VRM 1 in particular. if the cores getting hot I'm sure they will be very very hot. 125C kinda hot

O and my 290x has a similar problem as yours get some black screens while my 4k monitor reconnects and some amd message about errors when waking it from sleep mode. usually just reboot and everything runs fine and it's never done it while gaming. think it's the card not getting enough juice and some energy saving features messing with it.

or hell maybe it's just AMD drivers
