Which games?

I recently went from a 24" 1080p 60hz screen to a 27" 1440p 144hz BenQ freesync screen on my 290 Tri-X.

I tweaked a few settings in Division which i currently play the most and i average 85fps in game, this sound low, however its well well within the freesync range and it is buttery smooth to play, its actually suprised me how much of a difference adaptive sync makes to gaming.

Ive tried it also in Grim Dawn, Diablo 3, Elder Scrolls online and WoW and its the same in all 3 games, it just makes everything that much more smoother.

would definitely recommend it, you may need to drop a few settings to keep the frame rates up a bit, but not too much, as long as you can keep your minimum above the freesync minimum your good to go.

I would stick with the 290 for now.

The 1060 will probably give more FPS but the AMD cards combined with Freesync are a much better gaming experience.

Another thing to remember is G-Sync screens can be a little more expensive than the Freesync counterpart, i was lucky with my BenQ screen, i payed £360 for it brand new, normally it retails around £450, i found a promotion and pounced, my brother who also has a 290 done the same and both of us agree it was a great upgrade.

I have a close setup to yourself, a reference 290 and an Asus MG279Q (freesync range of 35 - 90Hz) also 1440p 144hz. I set the frame-rate limiter in the AMD control software to 85 to force the GPU to limit the top end within the freesync range.

I looked at the RX480 and it wouldn't give much of a boost, the only option im currently looking at is a cheap 8GB 390X or a cheap Fury X

Other than that wait for AMD's top teir chip :D

If you're playing modern games, you're going to run into plenty that you cant get to 60fps at 1440p with any of those cards without drastically reducing settings.

And games are only going to get more demanding.

I really wouldn't recommend anything less than a 980Ti/1070 unless you dont mind playing at less than 60fps.

Hi mate. Do you mind sharing your setting. I have a 390x and my fps often drop into the low 50s when playing the Division.

FYI on my rig (specs below) i'm getting ~65fps on the new doom with most settings on ultra (some on high) at 1440p

CPU : i7 5820k
RAM : 16GB DDR4
GPU : R9 290 (ref cooler =)
SCREEN : Asus MG279Q @ 1440p

Couple of things, the 290 is still ok at 1440p gaming in 2016 titles in my opinion ...... and the R9 290 has aged very will :D best GPU iv ever paied for :D (dunno what the GTX 780(Ti) scores in 2016 titles ;) )

Doom runs at 60fps on consoles already. Games that run at 30fps on consoles wont hit 1440p/60fps so easily on PC.

True enough .... but consoles dont run doom at ultra AFAIK. Whats one of the more demanding games as of late, personally iv just been playing BF4 / Fallout 4 / Doom / KSP .....

Who's being the drama queen now?:p

BF4, GTA V FC4 and a load of other titles ran great@1440p on FS BenQ with suitable settings using a 290, they don't need maxed out yet still play fantastic.

How's that being a drama queen? :/ Just having a discussion.

Just saying that these games, unlike something like Doom or MGSV, are going to be far more demanding and will not hit 1440p/60fps as easily. And there will likely be lots more of these games in the future.

And yea, you dont need to play these games maxed out, but with many of them, running at 1440p/60fps is going to require significantly reduced settings, if it can do it at all.

Someone also mentioned to me that you can turn down AA on a 1440p as its not needed as much? that helps with perf also?
You wont need excessive amounts of MSAA, but you certainly still need adequate AA. Depends on your tolerance for aliasing.

You said drastically reducing settings, now we have if it can do it at all.

Think about it next time before you blurt out those words as it tends to bite you back.:)

You don't have to drastically/significantly reduce that much outwith MSAA and have good gaming@1440p especially if you are using a G/F Sync panel.

There are loads of settings that can be tweaked and SweetFX can get rid of jaggies without the performance hit, 1440p is very doabble on a 290 in my experience.

Nvidias the only option from a 290 (so 1070 up), if you have to upgrade now, as AMD don't have anything yet to replace them, the 480/1060 would be a sidegrade, as they are for lower than 970/290 owners.
