Hi guys I was wondering if somebody might be able to shed some light on my problem, my R9 290 turned up this afternoon (bought in the today only deal yesterday) but whenever I put the card in my PC it won't POST. I just get a black screen.

The monitor is not displaying the "no signal" message so I guess the outputs are doing something.

Anybody got any ideas?

Put my 7950 back in and it works fine.

Are you on the latest bios version?

Flick the BIOS switch on the card, if its still black, put your old card back in and update your motherboard BIOS.

Try again.

Good idea, I have tried both card BIOS positions, I'll get myself a motherboard BIOS update now.

Gibbo -

Ready my thread its a couple down on this page.

I received a 290x aswell and it had the same problem we spent the whole weekend 6 pages deep trying to fix it and it didnt work.

It seems to be a common issue.

Link to thread: We never resolved the issue and Ive returned it for a refund and purchased a new card in the mean time. That is not to say we cannot try and help fix yours Daz but I just wanted to post and let Gibbo know.

HELP !!! (Urgent) 290x not being detected!

If card is not faulty, it does seem to be a case of the 290 is quite sensitive to motherboard, PSU or combination of both.

got the same problem myself. sapphire 290x came today. black screen straight away. got it working but as soon as i try to mine it black screens.

Problem resolved guys, just had to update my motherboard BIOS, which whist straightforward has lost my CPU OC settings :( although I can now use my R9 290 :)
This odd new BIOS won't let me adjust the CPU multiplier and I can't work out what I need to change, might just have to press the OC genie button and hope for the best.

I agree - could not get a 290 to run stable in my Motherboard - Gigabyte confirmed that my MB doesn't support UEFI Bios only cards.

I had to change from displayport to dl-dvi to get my 290x to work at 120 Hz. With displayport I couldn't get it to POST unless I set it to 60 Hz

Well my new card is working all nicely however since my BIOS update I have no control over my CPU multiplier or core voltage in the BIOS, I pressed the OC genie button which put my CPU to 4.2GHz but set the core voltage to 1.35 which is stupid because I could run at 4.2GHz with just 1.27V before, now the temperatures are much higher.

I had a work colleague who couldn't get his R9 290X working at all. New drivers, new Windows, different PSU, nothing worked.

In the end it turned out the problem was that he was not using the primary PCI-E slot.

That is disappointing. Are you sure you set it to "manual" mode or whatever the MSI equivalent is to unlock the multiplier? Don't see why they would lock it on a bios update.

It's OK I was just being a Muppet, turns out I just had to use the +/- keys to adjust the multiplier rather than having a drop down menu like there was before. All is fine, now to play some games :)

Off on a bit of a tangent but still relevant.

I recall a while ago that somebody had issues with their pre overclocked bundle and had to do a bios update, but they were told this would invalidate their warranty, I believe it was Gibbo that told them this.
Now the question is with some of these R9 290's requiring a bios update for some boards , is the above warranty invalidation accurate or am I misremembering things?

Did it unlock?

I didn't have a go at unlocking the card yet, just been enjoying some super smooth BF4 goodness, it certainly feels more powerful anyway.

I'll probably have a go at flashing the card after boxing day when I get some spare time.

I had an issue when I first installed my 290X where the pc would take 5 or 6 goes to power on before it would boot. Sometimes even longer, switching on and off trying to get it to boot. Once it booted and got into windows it was fine.

Even at stock had the same issue.

Was starting to think I may have to upgrade my Socket 1156 Gigabyte board but it turned out all I needed to do was increase the cpu voltage.

Once I did that problem sorted and am now overclocking upto what I was before with the 6870.

So that may help some running a 290X on an older setup.

I've started running into problems with my card again now, just been trying to play some DOTA2, start getting black screens, manage to recover the game and then my performance is terrible.

Turns out the memory was clocking down to 150MHz and wouldn't go back up to 1250. Oh and the clock speed of the core seems to be continuously changing between 800 and 975MHz according to GPU-Z.

I haven't even overclocked the card or anything. Is this a driver problem or does it sound like a dodgy card?
