Race reports

Nice work Gavin.

I managed 21:04 on the V718 course. 5 seconds short :(

Still another 43 seconds knocked off my PB

Gah, 4 seconds is a pain but you've got to be pleased with that anyway.

Managed another win today :D

3/4 race at hillingdon, will write up for the blog soon, but basically solo'd away for the last 20 minutes to win. Pretty satisfying!

Great work.

I reckon you can make it fit but you'll need an adjustable cockpit and a layback post if the saddle is all the way back. Sometimes longer is better than lower.

It's worth experimenting with pad width too. Sometimes having them set wider makes it easier to sink your head between your shoulders and narrow your front profile. Some people find the opposite though.

My main worry with adjusting stuff is being slower! I'm clearly quick on the bike and don't want to lose that.

Do you have a powermeter? You can use it for some fairly rough drag calculations as Thomas has suggested. It's probably not reliable at all but I also like to benchmark people on Strava with powermeters who've done similar times to see how my power output compares.

There's a lot of trial and error involved though if you don't have access to a wind tunnel... I made a few changes before I happened upon my current setup which seems to be relatively fast for me. Based on a video from the weekend, I think my head position needs a tweak and I need to swap out my s-bends for j-bends. It wouldn't surprise me to change that though and go slower!

I am also giving away a fair amount of power though in TT position, I reckon about 20-25w down on road bike power for a 10 or 25. I'm going to try and train in TT position over winter to hopefully bridge that gap as much as possible. I think it's a fair trade off between aero and power though based on my times.

Friday night track league kicked off again on Friday (funny that). I was interested to see how I went with a decent block of training behind me. As a result I was riding 48x14 or 92" rather than 88" or 90" as I've ridden in the past.

12 lap course des primes: fast from the off, took about 6 laps to work up through the field then I clipped off the front to take a lap before settling back in to the bunch (you need to finish the race to pick up any points).

25 laps points race (sprints every 5): WIN! I never contest the first sprint as it's usually someone who goes balls out to win it then blows and is never seen again, so I settled in to the bunch and got through the first 5 laps easily enough. The pace started to drop on about lap 8 so I took the opportunity to attack off the front and got about half a lap on the field, and rode tempo to hold the gap and take the points. After that, I just looked to consolidate my position and sprinted from the bunch to take 2nd on the penultimate lap. Things dropped off with a couple of laps to go so I went on the attack again and was caught before the line, but still held on for fourth giving me the win by 1 point. :D

Elimination: rubbish start, got eliminated first after I was stuck below the bunch and didn't move back and round quick enough. I either tend to do very well or very badly in these, but starting position is crucial. If you're third or fourth wheel you can get pretty deep into the race without having to do much at all.

1km scratch: went for it from 750m but I was undergeared and soon got shot out the back, so nothing here

20 lap scratch: this went out quick but settled into a very sedate pace. I got a bit bored so thought I'd try a couple of digs. On the first one, three other riders bridged across but weren't prepared to do enough work to keep us away. On the final one, I got away about 3 laps out but was caught with a lap to go. I was spinning like mad and couldn't keep it going but hopefully the track legs will come back.

Aiming to race every fortnight or so to keep the VO2 lights on over winter, as the rest of my riding is going to be mainly tempo/threshold till the spring as I'm focusing more on TTs next year. I don't really have any interest in road racing at the moment. I'd love to try cross but already have five bikes and the season clashes with track! It looks immense fun though. :(

Quite like the track league format, lots of little events so you can either target one or two or ride hard across the board depending on how you feel on the night. I think my strengths lie in longer events but I still like the format.

Monday night league last night, nothing special in the shorter races but picked up a third in the 50 lap points race at the end. :) Won two of the five sprints in a race that averaged just over 27mph, which is about the same average as the 25 lap race I won a couple of weeks back so really happy with that.

Awesome riding and write up Thomas, you've made very impressive progress this year.

I only have one aero front wheel and it's the one I use for training so it's got a Sprinter Gatorskin tub on at the moment. Got my eyes out for a cheap Planet X front or similar so I can leave it on the TT bike.

Good stuff - was that the Vectors only reading one side? Not heard of that issue before, could it be a battery thing?

I rode a 10 on Saturday on a fairly sporting Cheshire course and got round in 23:17 (avg power of 277w) for an 8th place overall. Not the strongest field by any means but top 10 in an Open was a goal for the season so that is nice to achieve anyway.

I also finally got some pictures from the previous week's 10. I'd already swapped out the tail on my Giro Selector for the shallower one and it looks like a good option based on the pictures, it will hopefully help me get a bit lower at the front. I'm going to experiment with helmets a bit this year though as the L Selector is pretty huge vs the actual size of my head, surely can't be good for speed?!

Brief report from my 10 on the V718 at the weekend, which was my first time on there and second time on a quick course. Conditions were tough apparently with a lot of people going a minute or so slower than their ride there on Good Friday, but it's still prodigiously fast compared to most other courses in the country.

TTs aren't that interesting compared to road races, but still, flew off down the entry slip road and joined the main carriageway trying to keep my effort steady. I thought coming back would be easier than going out so looked to hold about 290w with a view to averaging about 280w overall. Started tapping out a steady rhythm but immediately this felt faster than I was expecting so I knew coming back could be hard going. Nevertheless, I kept the pace up and pushed on. The turn slip road comes early on this course, around mile 4 so mentally it's tough knowing you have the longer leg coming back, but on the right day the back leg can be really fast.

I came up, round the roundabouts and immediately kicked myself for coming up off my aerobars as these were definitely wide enough to take in tribars on a day when the roads weren't greasy. I tried to pick up my momentum back down the slip road and rejoined the road, dodging a couple of large looking potholes. I knew pretty much immediately this leg would not be easy going - I was going quicker than the out leg but not by much and my legs and throat were already burning.

At about the 7 mile mark, you pass Welton and the road drags upward almost imperceptibly but it really starts to bite. I tried to pick up my effort and get through this section, having it in the back of my head that the final mile or two would be much quicker. I was beginning to have my doubts about whether I could hold the effort so I just focused on keeping my cadence high and holding my head in the right position out of the wind as much as possible. I knew I wouldn't be capable of a strong finish, but I guess that means I had paced my effort well.

Ordinarily that final mile and a bit is very, very quick on the right day as it's the most exposed part of the course and usually benefits from the prevailing wind. On Saturday however I lost nearly 40 seconds here alone compared to the Strava KOM. I reckon better wind would have saved me 15-20 of those seconds although my legs were gone by that point so I couldn't have pushed any harder.

I crossed the line for an official time of 20:56 (PB +59 seconds) and a power PB of 286w (+8w). https://www.strava.com/activities/533834510 There is no doubt this is a fast course but I worked bloody hard for that time!

Definitely the fastest bike and car combo I've seen! Are you using Seasuckers?

Good ride and it'll be interesting to see how your times look when you're putting out similar power and have your position nailed. Must save a decent chunk of time. What wheels are you running btw?

Rode an open 10 myself on what is our usual club course so very familiar with it. Not got the official results yet but I was definitely inside 23 minutes for the first time. Slow going out but very fast on the wind assisted way back- was third to Simon Yates on a short segment so I reckon that makes me second really. :p

Racing there again on Monday, still feel a bit of tiredness from Mallorca so will be good to see improvements as that starts to dissipate.

I did my first 50 mile TT yesterday. TT race reports are dull compared to the road race ones so I'll just go with random thoughts!

-50 is a fun distance to race, especially if you like doing tempo rides for training. The race effort you can manage is a bit more intense but very different to a 10 or 25. If you do long rides semi regularly you'd probably enjoy it (within reason!).
-Having to think about drinks and food makes it a bit more challenging. I went with one bottle and 2 gels plus being well fuelled beforehand which seemed about right.
-The mental side of maintaining concentration and effort over that distance is a real challenge, I got woken up by a few potholes...
-I was really happy to crack 2 hours!

An 18 off 320w is very impressive. Still waiting for my NoPinz suit, starting to get a bit annoyed now TBH. Always had good service in the past but this was ordered mid-April with a leadtime of 4-6 weeks so would have thought I'd have had it by now. I was told it would be in the post next day for this Wednesday but that's been and gone. I feel bad about chasing all the time, but at the same time I want my skinsuit!

PM me your details and i'll try to get my mate to speak to Blake for you.

Sure it'll turn up and not got any events for a couple of weeks... If I'm still waiting next Friday though I'll drop you a message. He's been responsive, just the timescales were a bit longer than I was told. That's fine but would just be good to know when to expect it!

Couple of minor tweaks to position and finally got my NoPinz supersuit for this weekend's events, happily resulting in two PBs (one distance, one course):

All time 25 PB there, beating my time on the much faster J5/8 (where admittedly I cocked up the turn). Over a minute faster than I've been on this course but for the same power. Other riders felt it was slow day but wind at least gave you a push up Twemlow Lane which is a notoriously slow stretch (draggy and awful surface). Really happy with that.

Today was the club open hilly TT, smartly swapped out the 11-23 for a 12-30 though not so smartly forgot to check the limit screw. Dropped chain on the first climb hence the difference between overall time and moving time... Frustrating but lesson learned. Legs were feeling it from yesterday too so about 10w down on where I should be, but still 5 minutes quicker than last year's time, fastest rider from our club and 10th overall. 81km/h top speed! Appreciate the regular TTers aren't very local but this is a great course, probably my favourite to race. Shame it only gets used once a year.

Yep, aero bars all the way. My rear brake does very little anyway so I might as well go out in style if I'm going to. :p

In all seriousness, I find my aero position is very stable so doesn't feel as twitchy as it might.

Congrats, that's a great time!

I did my second 100 today. Was interesting... Drunk far too much last time but got it wrong this time and hit the wall with 25 to go. Feeling sick, couldn't eat anymore etc. Grovelled round the last 25, rolled back to the car and passed out briefly. Felt much better after some water and cooling down. Not great though.

Ended up just off the time I did last time out which I'm happy with all things considered, but would have been 3 or 4 minutes quicker if I fuelled it right. Plenty of lessons learned. Scratched the 100 itch for now, next one I do will be next year and on a fast course I hope. They're not something I plan on doing often but great training all the same.
