Racism when buying cars?

I was talking to a mate today who was phoning round various private sellers looking for a used Lexus LS400. The odd thing was that he was discouting any cars that were owned by anyone with an asian name.
I asked him why and he replied that asians don't look after their cars and that they are bound to be dodgy or clocked.

This seems odd to me.

Would you not buy a car due to the color or race of it's previous owner?

Myself, I'm more interested in the state of the vendor's house. A messy house usually means a messy car in my experience.

At the end of the day it's no different to saying I wouldn't buy a car off of an english or white owner as they have probably eaten greasy food in it.

It all comes down to the individual at the end of the day.

Now I used to think that myself, I then had it confirmed when working at my previous job.

My team leader was an asian, and was looking at the time to buy a used Mercedez C Class, he was scouring the autotrader ads online, ringing round (or getting me to ), but would ALWAYS discount a car currently owned by an asian, either by just fobbing them off, or by just not turning up to view.

If an asian wont buy a car off an asian, what does that tell you?

Can't say I've ever though about it. I do look at the person/their house/other cars on the drive etc to try and gadge how well they look after things in general.

I've been discriminated against by a dealer for not being "posh" enough.

I wanted to test drive a BMW 535. I turned up in my Saab and when I said "any chance of a test drive?" he said "Is that your car?" nodding towards my Saab. I said that it was and he said "No, I don't think it's worth you going for a drive in the BMW, sorry" and went back into his little office.

Scum bag!

I know a lot of people who wouldn't buy from High Wycombe as it is full of abbreviated Pakistanis. They don't even phone the number.

Personaly, just ***** scum ;)

I always find that car dealers which leave the boots open on their cars are dodgy. I don't know why though, it just seems to be the case :p

I don't think I'd discount anyone because of their ethnicity, but I would if I didn't like the look of them.

i dont think this is racist really.

I will not deal with asians for a couple of reasons and I think this is completely down to their culture and the way they do business. The fact that they have different colour skin bares no relation to it. Thats doesnt make me racist. My best mate at work is a pakistani and we go out drinking etc and both love our motors so have a lot in common.

Racism is basically hatred because of skin colour/religion in my book, short sighted and pathetic. I feel I have valid reasons for not dealing with these people.

I think with all ethnical groups you get dodgy people, to tar everyone with the same brush is a bit shallow and narrow minded in my opinion.

Personally, I would never by a car privately. I would like the backup of a reputable dealer

Agreed!

My problem is that EVERY time I have dealt with this group I have been left with a bad taste in my mouth including 2 ebay transactions where I lost a total of £350. The only transactions in over 300 I have had ANY problems.

I have sold too cars aswell and had issues that I wont go into.

I take people as I find them!

I totally agree with him I would be cautious if it was owned by an asian too. Thats down to my own personal experiences though. After hundreds and hundreds of transactions online the only ones that have ever gone wrong have been with asians. Could be a conincidence but its always going to be at the back of my mind especially with something so costly as a car.

were you actually going with a view to buying the car?

if the owner (any race) could guarantee the mileage of the car and everything checks out fine with the service history, hpi etc then who cares what colour the owner is. If the car ias mint and what you are after then go check it out.

you are there to buy the car and not to discriminate.

but yes i know of some prople who do the same, everyone is different and have their own issues about buying a car from a different race.

I really wouldnt care about the owner with regards to the car as long as it all checked out and it looked in good condition.

Where i would have a problem is actually dealing with an asian in a typically rough asian type estate, wouldnt feel comfy taking lots of cash to their house etc without some friends to back me up.

Wrong - maybe, but i wouldnt feel comfy. Then again the same would apply to any rough estate so it has little bearing on the race.

i think its generally completely academic, someone could live in a dive and still have a mint car, weighting decisions on unreliable criteria such as race is flawed imo

When we are talking about asians, I guess we are talking about Pakistanis, Indians etc not Far East oriental asian ??

Personally I would never buy anything off a Pakistani due to having nothing but bad experiences from them, but on the other hand I've always had nothing but pleasant experiences with Indians.

Yep. I drove about 30 miles specifically to see the car. It was the top of my list. I ended up buying a Jag in the end.

Oh, and I was about 35 years old at the time, I had my wife with me and the Saab was a 5 year old, fully loaded 9-3 Aero.
