Racism when buying cars?

I find it amusing that everyone seems to think Asian people don't look after their cars. Find any non-petrolhead whitey and their cars will be no better looked after than their Asian equivilent. If the person likes cars, they'll look after it, no matter what their background, skin colour, favourite colour etc.

This man speaketh the sense, being of pakistani descent, it is true that many dont service their cars using a dealer network, why should you waste the money on ordinary cars, i personally do the servicing myself as i dont trust garage monkeys at all, i even do most of my mates services (whitey`s!)

But most folk who i know that own newish mercs tend to look after them.

That said i would never buy a beemer of an asian (ind or pak) dude as many of them tend to be dodgy rude boys, the merc is regarded as a respectable car in the comunity, the bimmer not.

I think its unfair to discount on race, just go and use your best judgement.

I even find dealers discrimnate on dress, when i have been going in during the week in my work garb (suit etc) i get treated with respect, in my weekend jeans and t get-up you pretty much dont get the time of day.

your firs sentence is a sweeping statement, and a generalisation.

i am part of "everyone" and i dont think that at all

Of the asians I know, mainly from uni, very few of them serviced their car correctly, they normally just went to the garage when they broke down.

:o

Thats student's for you!

I was talking cars with a mate of mine (of bangladeshi decent) and he said that he would never buy a car from an asian for that very reason. I said but surely if its got a fsh to which he laughed and said "you pick the make and i'll get you a full main dealer history by the end of the week"

:o

heh. It wont be on the system though!!! Just stamped iirc.

Manufacturer servicing is for mugs - if I bought a car off someone who'd done that I'd probably also find that it had a ragged clutch and a host of other nasties

Whereas someone who'd done their own fixes I'd be far more likely to go with :)

I don't think it's racist, per se, because deciding not to buy a car from an Asian isn't, in itself, an offensive act. If you were to turn round to the chap and say, "oh, I didn't realise you were an Asian/<offensive term for>, I'm not buying off of you", then yeah, that could be construed as Racism.

Personally I reckon that as an individual we have a right to buy from who we like. At the end of the day, you should be able to decide the circumstances on when you strike a deal for yourself, and if one of those criteria is that you only want to buy from white middleaged women from Surrey, then so be it.
