Radeon 2900pro v 1950pro

Not know and not in past mate.

Nvidia used to have crap drivers, then came Detonators, they were proven in many reviews to be far better than ATI's esp in OpenAL, then same story for the newer Forcewares, then Nvidia got lazy when they launched the 8800's they did nothing much for it in XP or Vista and there is no excuse even if ATI never had a card to match.

The past weeks they have gotten their fingers out and thrown out a lot of drivers with big gains and some fixes, no real pat on tha back deserved though as they should have gave support all along.

It funny how peeps have very short memories, same with ATI making botch of the 2900's, Nvidia did it with the 5000's :)

nvidia drivers are far superior to ati drivers now. AA not working in games, gfx glitches, its just the life story of ati. i for one will not be getting another ati card ever again.

i guess its all down to money at the end of the day. nvidia do nothing but work on gfx cards and they have more cash to throw into research, development and also support.

Thats true, and the more I think about it, the more I think I've got a lemon in my PC, I dont know what I was doing selling those GTS's for a bloody 2900XT, I'm gutted.

How about 8800GTS 320Mb vs. 2900pro 512Mb?

Fine the GTS will prob perform better than the pro in most games but does that make it a better value card? The GTS 320Mb still cost £180 delivered new while the 2900pro will be available from just £148, plus you get the black box which is not available from steam and the possibility of achieving XT speed. For a person that only game at 1280*1024 like me I know which one I'll get. If that price turn out to be wrong then it's an entirely different case though.

@willhub - come on snap out of it it's not the end of the world...

Willhub look on the bright side. You have that extra memory to play with ;)

Assuming it was 320 GTS's you sold?

To be honest I've seen driver problems on both sides. Right now the majority of ATis flaws are with Vista and DX10. Considering they've only had the card out for a few months it's not that bad. nVidia 3-4 months in were still absolutely abysmal in the Vista driver department.

If you have a decent PSU then the 2900 really won't stress it. So for those people with a PSU that can handle it the 2900XT is better value for performance then the 640MB or the GTX. I'd recommend it to anyone that didn't have the cash to blow on the GTX. However I have recommended the GTX to many people that did have the cash to spend so please don't just assume I'm an ATi fanboy. I've even recommended to 320MB GTS to those who simply can't afford a 2900XT. Hopefully if the 2900Pro performance is good then I can recommend that to them instead.

It was a 640mb I sold lol.

I'm hoping someone wants to swap a 2900 for a GTS 640 again, I'm missing the GTS.

I dont know if its Vista or what.

But BMW M3 Challenge., with any AA on its choppy, same with no AA I think, GTS SA in XP and Vista stutters, Quake 4 with 8xAA is slightly laggy on Ultra settings, Lost Planet, crappy fps in dx9 and 10 with any AA enabled and so so good with no AA.

All at 1680x1050.

WA WA, all you do is moan, cant you just enjoy your games without worrying about what FPS your getting, pleased with my 2900, i get great performance, thinks its best you get a 360, you would probably be at home there.;)

I moan for a bloody reason, I dont look at the fps at all, its coz its so choppy.

Anyone else in Vista with these games and is your performance fine with a 2900.

Does seem like will has more probs than any other 2900 owner. Did you
do a complete reinstall of windows will.

I have done a number of times, might have to give XP a go, but aint use to XP after using Vista for so long, just dont feel right.

I am not sure if it could be this motherboard I use.

Were you not getting worse performances than other X2900 users though?. I'm sure I seen you post a few times that your system wasn't keeping up with weaker systems before.

I dont know what to say man, I've totally confused myself, I think with the GTS I may of been behind, my 3DMark scores seem to be on par, thats about it, I'm thinking of formatting HDD, doing a barebones test and taking the PC out of the case to do the tests aswell, I may also try Windows XP.

Its really bugging me why the performance is so bad, I'm going to have to get to the bottom of this though if its the card or what.

I have just not so long ago added and extra gb of ram, dont know if that may have its problems.

Uh so much stuff to check.

I agree with you fully m8. You have a real nice system and it's been a royal PITA it seems.

Hopefully after you dissect and analyse your PC that the problems will get ironed out.

Start of with 2 sticks of mem (2gb), stock clocks, new install of OS/OS's and have a good research for a decent and stable BIOS. Maybe this time round things will be ok. My m8 has had some trouble with his e6600 and GTX in SLi but a few installs of XP got him sorted eventually so ya never know ;).

I think I'll try the latest Bios, and XP, you think I should put my cpu to stock aswell?

Will do you use ati ccc. That gave me numerous problems with my
x1900xtx. I had low fps and that was all things switched off and all
settings to performance. I had to reinstall driver without it to get my
performance back to where it needed to be.

What did you use as a replacement for CCC?

I tried ATi Tray Tools and could not choose above 6xAA :(.

Good idea. How long has your CPU been stress tested for?.

3.2Ghz for 8 hours, 3.4Ghz for around 9 hours (2gb ram, unstable with 3gb), also with orthos on my dad was playing Bioshock too, so I considered it rock steady.

Ahhh then yeah, best to leave the CPU as is. It was just to rule out everything but 3.4Ghz and Bioshock playing kinda tells you that it's not the weakest link ;).

I put it back on eventually and left most things as they were except for
aa and af all was fine. Thing was though i could never find out what
setting it was that made it slow down so much as i put all settings back to
normal and was still slow. Could try Ati tray see how it runs with that
if still the same you will know its not the ccc. Try running 6 x aa with tray tools
and then 6 x aa with ccc and compare results.

iv seen those 150 quid pros at many retailers now. and for 150 quid even i can;t argue against them. the price is too low to complain about really which helps make up for its short commings.
but if the 320gts drops down to 150quid as well then the pro has got nothing going for itself.
