Radeon HD 5970 Offers Massive Overclocking Headroom

Volt modding is in software though isn't it? Perhaps the utils don't work for it yet.

ANyway the the power charts is for the whole system

I didnt go by the review for power numbers, I went by the ATI slide recently revealed which states the card is 294W. I dont know why they'd quote system power numbers its meaningless as it depends on what you have installed in the system.

Digital VRMs means its will be as easy as moving a slider to up the core voltage. The power supplied via PCI-E 6 and 8 pin is a rating limit, it doesn't physically limit the actual power available. In fact a cable will continue to supply power until it overheats and melts or the psu gives out and/or hits a current limiter.

I've never voltmodded, I took a look today and from what I've seen voltmodding is BIOS flashing to get small voltage increases, and requires you to modify the cards resistors to get higher power draws.

I've never heard of a voltage regulator which is purely digital (just a slider) but then again I've not looked into it in any greath depth, Ive never seen it on any of the standard overclocking tools I've used.

However you look at it, initial overclocking isn't that impressive, I'll wait for a few more to crop up to confirm/deny the overclocks.

VAT and import duty make for a 24% increase in price, so £360 is actually £445.

Import duty, VAT, 0 day price hikes whatever it is, it's a rip off. If america wasn't populated by americans i'd be living their just for their higher wages and lower hardware costs :}

The 4890s were the first cards to introduce the digital voltage regulation chips.

There is software now where you merely move a slider to up the voltage of your graphics card's GPU.

Same way you overclock it.

Erm, actually, the X1900 series had software voltage overclocking...

MSI make the software, but it's not specific to their own cards, loads of people have been using them.

Plus, it's for the volterra regulation chips, which the 5970 also uses.

If they don't work already, it'll just take an update to the current Afterburner software to add support.

I'm pretty sure they didn't.

The 4850/4870s and X2s didn't have them either, nor did the 2XXX and 3XXX.

I think after the 4890 release, there were a few non-reference 4870 and X2 cards that used them, but the 4890 came before them.

Yes. They do.

I had four of them. I even wrote an overclocking guide for them.

I still have my X1900XTX IceQ card.

I was called a GURU on these cards back in the day.

Plus actually my 4870 does have voltage control. Both ATT and that MSI app allow me to change the voltages and they work...

Well I stand corrected. :)

I'll have to give MSI afterburner a go my self.

credit card ready so long as it's no major premium over twin 5850's at launch prices. I'm highly suspicious that ati and the retail channel will be looking to capitalise on this like the 58xx..... I'm also highly suspicious it won't fit in my case without a heavy dose of mr dremel......

Just because I think people are out to get doesn't mean they aren't, paranoia isn't a state of mind, it's a lifestyle choice.

When are people expecting this to show in stock?

Do dual-chip cards benefit from Lucid's Hydra?

If not, wouldn't two 5870s be a hell of a lot better (with that board), especially considering they've higher clocks to begin with? Hypothetically.

They should be out tomorrow.
