Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

And 49% = nearly 1900 rpm - seems high?

na you didn't see the fan profiles both were set about 49%.....if they'd been set to 60% they would have been cooler a lot cooler......

Just to clear some things up, the noise of this would almost certainly have been extremely low even at 60%. Look at the settings in that panel, min was 1040rpm max was 2200rpm. So even at 100%, that would be 2200rpm, at 60% I would guess it was somewhere around the 1700-1800rpm range, that would be next to silent.

For comparison my 290 does 1150rpm at 25%(lowest afterburner allows), 2700rpm at 50% and 5150rpm at 100%. This card is incredibly quiet at 40% which is 2000rpm, it starts to get louder and irritating at 50% and 2700rpm and is horrible above 60%. Blower and fan speed % mean nothing, it depends entirely on what the range of the fan is set to. 1000-2000rpm then 2 or 100% will be pretty damn quiet, if the range is 3000-6000rpm, then at 2% it will be bad and at 100% you'll want to kill yourself.

I would guess that reducing max/target temps the fan would have closed or stayed at 100%, but given that max was set to 2200rpm that would still have been quiet.

I guess OCUK will be doing maximum price gouge now, so the 4GB model will be £200+ and the 8GB closer to £300. Then we'll get people saying that Polaris is overpriced.

But the price is already set, the price is $199 for 4GB and $229 for the 8GB 480. That has not changed.

Not AMD's fault the pound has lost value or that the UK retailers may choose to use this to price gouge.

When the card comes out, we will look at the price, work out how much $229 + VAT works out and then we will know if gouging is taking place or not :)

Well if they do, I will look elsewhere. I am a big proponent of OcUK and their service but not sure it is worth the over exuberant price gouging I am seeing on the 1080 cards.

$229 = £167.18 + 20% = £200.62

There should be a profit margin in there for re-sellers already.

I expect them to be £229, this allows for transport and admin costs.

any more and re-sellers will be price gouging.

Lets face it if stores have to take a bit of a hit on the RX480 and other stock delivered but not yet paid they will likely increase prices on other products in stock that have been paid to help balance any margin/loss. I query the situation with Gibbo and stock not paid if some competitors may already of paid up front as surely Ocverclockers UK will need to try and still balance the price to be competitive?

Situation reminds me a bit like cigarettes/tobacco and warehouses buying as much stock as possible pre budget to help maximise profit as they typically always increased in price.

I cannot believe for one moment that OC aren't hedging currency given all the uncertainty leading up to this vote - and especially given its all being supplied outside of Europe. Upping prices reeks of profiteering in the short term. Once all the currencies settle down from the news and it all goes back to normal I wonder if the prices will fall!?!

I'm off to the Supermarket shortly so hoping the price of non-EU produce hasn't also increased.

hedging currency when all sales are in GBP is effectively playing the currency markets - a big deviation from their core competencies. If they sell much in other denominations that they can also buy in then I'd expect them to have reserves but otherwise having large sums in other currencies is a significant risk for them.

Most new games the 390 is a lot faster than a 970. I wouldn't even class them the same anymore. So if it is 970 performance that's a big step-down by AMD standards.

I hope the price doesn't' go up too much. I'm in ole Ireland and the UK is always my first choice, as if I buy from the mainland I usually need to RMA to there, and it takes ages. :(

Yeah well whatever the prices WERE going to be they are going to be more than that.
And my bottom line for what I'll pay hasn't changed.

More than £210 for the 8GB reference and I'm out. Which it probably will be in this situation and I cant even fully blame OCUK for that in a period of volatility.

If we'd voted remain, we might have actually gotten reduced prices. Not that this should have been the main incentive for voting, but still....annoying.

It differs from game to game, sometimes AMD is ahead and sometimes nvidia. I've gotta say i see nividia ahead more often though.

Few extra quid on GPUs or open up for the enrichment... hmm.

Poor AMD though, their big budget offering got blown out by brexit! They were hoping to get back market share with this. :(

Really just depends on which batch of games you use to compare.

It is fair to say that there's a moderate trend of modern AAA games starting to run a bit better on AMD, though. There have always been some, but there's more than normal lately and some predict this will continue. I certainly expect any MS-based UWP titles to follow that trend, but as for the rest, I'm not entirely sure.

I mean, for the near term, this isn't exactly immediately bad for anybody except the UK. So they could still do just fine.

Lets see if we can get to 300 pages of speculation on a midrange card before any official info is released :)
