Yes you do need to obviously. That equates to more power for less than £200 and better DX12 future proofing if you don't mind crossfire.
X fire isn't for everybody but I have lost count of the amount of posts I have spotted in various locations where people say they will buy two. These people could well be potential 1080 buyers looking for a better deal.
Actually I am dumbfounded how many times I read that.
A price/performance seed has been planted that will give > 1080 power at a fraction of the price.
Nobody would be considering that had that comparison not been made.
Whoever gave AMD that idea is genius.
I think most people that have been burnt by Xfire probably wont trust AMD by buying 2 x 480, however many people who have never dabbled in mgpu setups might make the leap with the cost of these cards and the potential performance they offer.
Ive had Xfire 280x and Xfire 290's, both worked fine when i had and used them, infact at one point i have 3 x 280X running in my PC and it worked fine for the most part, some games wouldnt use Xfire so i was running 1 GPU which im fine with if the performance from 1 is there.
Depending on how these cards come out i am fully prepared to buy 2 of them to tide me over til Vega lands, i dont play many modern titles excluding The Divsion which incidentally recently got its Xfire fired i believe, that and WoW which is CPU heavy anyhow, and a bit of D3 and Elder Scrolls, all the games i play run fine on my 290, so if this card beats my 290 performance then im happy

I think this card is exciting a lot of people to try out mgpu
