Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Is 1350 a fairly hefty OC on a reference RX480?

Ventilation may not be the best on his case, either.

It would be getting very hot or thermal throttling at that speed. Gamers nexus water cooled one and only managed 1390 to a reasonable level of stability. After that it was power limited.

After seeing that video of the strip down, the cooler looks like total garbage. I know the reference card is perhaps not supposed to have anything trick, but that heat sink is very poor. No way I'd get a reference one of these.

So overclocking on the reference board is a big no no then?

You 'can' overclock, but looking at everyone's results it's definitely not worth it. I don't think I've seen a +10% overclock on the refference cards, and going by the power draw @ stock of 140+ Watts in extreem cases, and with only a 6 pin connector, it's fairly obvious there isn't much headroom in the refference card.
 
No way I am overclocking til I know for sure that my Mobo won't go pop lol. I have sent Asus an email asking what their stance is and am I safe with the RX 480 using more power than the 75W PCI-E on my Asus X99-A II.

Sometimes yes, and especially if you were just going to rip the cooler off and put it under water. But it appears the power supplied to the reference is already on the limit at stock which no amount of cooling will help much.

Your issue isn't the power pcie problem. Your games was just crashing. You wasn't getting the same blackout.
 
Its unlikely, unless it was pulling like 200w from the PCIE slot. Cmon get that review up gregster! :D

Yer but I had a proper headache with this new build, so not keen on gambling. Also I have done a mini review on my Youtube channel for now but this afternoon will be spent drinking many many beers with the guys from midlifegamers.co.uk in Ipswich :D

I still don't get it. So far, I think the info we got is:

1) The RX 480 exceeds PCIe power draw when overclocked

2) More or less any card will do so when overclocked

3) Tom's Hardware identified this when running overclocked at 4K

...yet AMD admit to some problem that will be rectified with a driver update?

What do they intend to do? Lower the power draw? Up to what? I mean, how many spikes are an 'acceptable level' for this? And what about other cards that draw more power when overclocked?

This just keeps making no sense...
 
no some stock cards are also over the limit,and lest not forget,you can buy the 480 already overclocked..

I'm confident the AIB's with more than a 6 pin connector will solve it,doesnt really help people with ref cards tho :(
 
Yes watched that so it gives confidence the AIB will reach the 980 performance target many of us hoped and for in around or not much over £250.

Not only that, they will arrive just in time for competing with the GTX1060. For about the same price you can get either a stock 1060 or a partner 480 with about the same performance (unless we're talking about some really memory-hungry scenario where maybe 6GB vs 8GB actually makes a difference).

These partner AIBs will definitely have double-6 or single-8 pin connectors and superior cooling, so I expect one to be able to OC them even further (the 1500MHz rumours may be true). We'll see...

In any case, the 1060 will be at a 192bit bus, and 2GB less memory. If it's clearly 1080p though, it won't matter. In fact, the question is whether partner 480s will be fast enough for decent 1440p. If they still can't hit reasonable framerates, then I guess the extra bandwidth and RAM won't be a significant advantage (at least until newer games are out).

The 1060 will of course lose out in DX12 and will be less future-proof, but should overclock like a devil and consume much less power.

It exceeds the power draw even where not overclocked.
Most cards don't when overclocked.
Paper identified when not running overclocked at 1080p anyway.


This forum is hilarious. People defend AMD when even AMD acknowledge there is a problem.
