Hoping you folks who actually have brains, unlike me, can help.

I'm confused with radiators. They all seem to be standard sizes in 100mm increments of width. I've measure them all in my house and not a single one of them is in a 100mm increment. It's a new build so i'm talking about standard modern 'compact' radiators.

How the hell do you measure them? Am I doing it wrong? We'll take one as an example. I've tried the dimensions of the front part itself - this was 1560mm. Valve to valve is 1580mm.

Is this classed as a 1600mm rad?

It's only ten years old. They're all modern rads but one or two are either a bit wimpy for the room they're in or have either been painted - badly or have had the paint flake off.

If you're looking for a direct replacement you'll be lucky.

The width, the height of the valve compared to the bottom of the rad and the distance from the centre of the pipe to the wall all change wildly over the years depending on trends in heating.

If you're looking to change radiators budget for a plumber to bring his pipe bender in and give you a nice new solid piece from below the floorboards, it's quite standard.

Unless you have one of those awful micro bore systems then bin the lot.

The rad feeds and returns all come from the walls.

'They're in the walls man!'

So minus a plumber and plasterer I could just get valve extenders. Guessing my radiators are just weird sizes!

...I could just get valve extenders.

If what you're after is replacing them with Type 22's to give more BTU then fortunately that's not that hard to do nowadays due to the amount of extension/adapters available, like these - http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Heating/d230/Radiator+Valves/sd2762/Radiator+Valve+Extension/p24460

If you are going from single to double (type 11-21 or 22) you will need to adjust the pipework anyway as the valves will be further away from the wall

Checked the dimensions on the pipes and it looks ok to go to double due to the valves being centralised on double rads. Which is useful!
Definitely going to need extensions though, looking like 30mm on each end :(
Really weird that it doesn't have standard sizes for a modern house though.

30mm is nothing really and will hardly be noticeable and if one valve is more exposed than the other you could stagger the extensions to help hide it.
