Radio Controlled Planes

Do you need to get some kind of insurance to fly model planes outside?

Yes you need to get BMFA insurance, otherwise you're in serious do-do. You have to use the correct frequency for "air" models.

Well that's pretty foolish then, if the model loses control and kills someone or damages property you're liable. Would you drive without insurance?

BMFA insurance only covers you if your at a propper model airfield run by a club...

You dont have insurance to use r/c cars, play football, cricket, fly kites etc......

Theye all dangerous, you need some common sense....

I have been in the BMFA for 8 years now

and I cannot stress this enough

DO NOT fly without being in a BMFA Sanctioned club.

If you are in a pretty park flying on 35mhz and having a laugh with your mates with your £80 RC plane toy and 4 miles away there is a BMFA club and someone is on the same frequency as you and your frequency's clash and you or the other flyer get a lock out.

Imagine a £600 plane for eg with a 14" carbon / wood / plastic prop spinning at 3400 rpm that can take your finger off, never mind what other damage it can cause, on a .61 size 2 stoke engine going out of control and into a childrens school play ground, your garden, the local town.?? someones car etc etc

Seriously, join a club, you may think flying a plane is easy, left is left etc but not when it is coming towards you, it's all reversed.

The club will help you learn to fly, safety of your model and you will hopefully enjoy it all.

Your local flying club will have some trainer planes that you will be able to buddy up with a experianced flyer and get an idea before you buy.

Take there advice and stay safe.

Props hurt and cut fingers, trust me, every RC flyer has or will cut there fingers on them. They hurt like buggery!

How much is this insurance? Spending 100-200 on a plane is one thing, but if the insurance is more than that, then forget it!

Just join the BMFA for ~£25 a year.

I didn't bother with insurance when I only had 'parkflyer' electric models. They can't do much harm, plus you use common sense to only fly when it is empty enough.
