Radio host Mike Dickin is dead

Its a total cliche but the mould was definitely broken after he was made. Mike was a legend, serious and passionate about the issues he felt strongly - a real champion of democracy - but yet at the same time he had a wicked sense of humour and a real wit about him. Listening to his weekend show on Talksport was always interesting and intriguing but often also amusing - especially when he got a few of the stereotype late night phone in morons calling him up - as he didn't suffer fools at all, let alone gladly & often was the master of putting them in their place with a few choice but never profane words.

One classic sticks in my mind, a guy phones him up & is summarily inarticulate in his argument. Cue Mike, exasperated by this guy, asing him: "Who the hell let you near a phone?!". After he got rid of the guy he gave the classic statement: "If you're thick or if you're illiterate or if you're inarticulate, LEAVE THE ***** PHONE ALONE!" :D

some of his views were very Victorian to say the least.

So what? A view being old-fashioned doesn't make it wrong; it should be judged in its own right. Besides, if we are to proceed on the basis that being old makes an opinion in some way flawed, we might as well scrap all our existing opinions because they'd be shown, ultimately, to be wrong as time marches on.

I heard him a few times actually. I didn't agree with a lot of what he said, but his heart was in the right place and he stuck to his convictions. It also made compelling listening :)

RIP

I used to listen to Mike on LBC when I was a kid as my mum and dad were big fans of his. Not heard him recently on talksport (prefer LBC still) but it was a shock to read this. LBC's 'older' presenters like Clive Bull and Steve Allen who knew him seemed to be quite shocked as well.

RIP.

I used to listen to him regularly on Talk Radio. RIP :(

Yeah I used to listed to Talk Radio in the mid90s. I prefered the likes of Caesar the Geezer, Wild Al Kelly and Ian Collins & The Creatures of the Night (who replaced Al Kelly after he was booted out for being too controversial).

Annoying voice and condescending tone, but he did have a certain gravitas and was quite a big name in radio. At least he stuck to his guns rather than just being a lovey-dovey 'yes man'.

Just a little bumpage as a reminder to anyone that was a fan of the big man and to those that didn't know of him but need to see how great he was, there is a dedication show hosted by James Whale on Talksport tonight at 10pm. You can listen on line, DAB or old fashioned wireless (as Mike would have called it :D )

DAB

I urge you to turn off that brainwashing box in the corner of the room, turn on the radio and enjoy the King of talk radio. :)

I was gutted to hear of Mike's death last Tuesday in the 2pm news. You couldn't really help but like Dickin even though he was a grumpy old sod at times.

The irony is that this year was the first time he didn't do 'Clash of The Titans'. This years was recorded on Monday, the day Mike died. He may of been still with us but for these events. :(

I'll be listening to Whaley with the tribute tonight, as i always do.

RIP The King.

Clash of the Titans has already been recorded and will be aired at midday on Christmas Day and again at 6pm. If you miss that they will be repeating the programme it at 6pm on New Years Eve.

When is Clash of the Titans? I'll tune in just for that and tolerate the adverts, if I've nothing else on at the time. :)

I always used to listen to COTT but won't be this year due to a certain Jon gaunt being on there. Mike Dickin and James Whale make an art out of being controversial but likeable. Gaunt just isn't likeable and therefore isn't listen-to-able!

Did anyone know that Dickin actually drove one of the mini's in the original Italian Job and was a really good bass player?

One of the minis in the actual film is driven by him? I had no idea whatsoever :)
