Radio Jammer

They are illegal.

They emit static/nonsense over a large number of frequencies which interferes with stuff that should be on certain frequencies. As you would need several licenses to transmit over such a large amount of frequencies, and those licenses will still only allow you to transmit certain things on the frequencies it is illegal.

However, they are very easy to make and if low powered will probably only work within a small radius (the distance obviously depending on your design and power). You are unlikely to get caught and it would be a fun prooject, however I definitely don't condone the malicious use of one.

Hoping to block out party political broadcasts or something? :p

Yes, they are illegal, but... ahem... they can be quite fun and useful for cutting off idiots on the train who seem to think the whole world needs to hear the moronic details of their life for the whole journey..

Nah, just that circumstances lead to me being in a place regularly where a certain radio station (Metro or Galaxy or something) is played, it literally makes me want to kill myself.

Of course, i could just listen to my own music over it, but then i couldn't talk to other people :p

I've often wondered why foot troops don't have mobile jammer units with them in Afghanistan, etc. A lot of the bombs are set of by mobile phones so blocking phones within a certain radius would surely be of some help?

Mobile Phones operate on a completely different frequency to FM Radio but the principle's the same... send them a letter :p

The use is not legal.

The use of any device that interfering with any wireless telegraphy, is an offence under the Wireless Telegraphy Act 2006 Wireless Telegraphy Act 2006. It is an indictable offence that on conviction in Crown Court carries a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine. The courts can also order forfeit of any apparatus used in the commission of the offence.

From OFCOM: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/radiocomms/ifi/enforcement/

From the Act: http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts2006/ukpga_20060036_en_6

You have been warned. ;)

An unlimited fine?

Yup. Primarily aimed at illegal broadcasters and hitting the people behind them where it hurts. But in practice it’s usually the equipment that gets confiscated and a small fine. Unlimited fines are nothing new in UK legislation.

Hmm... i thought it would be more 'all your earnings are belong to us'. :p

They do, the vehicles are tooled up with jammers etc. A lot of the mines are just detonated using long wire.

Also, GSM data from mobile phones spans across quite a few different frequencies doesn't it? Provided that the tangos over there are using GSM.

I've got some wossits which interfere with radio signals, actually high voltage spark generators but you get a mess of static on any radios in nearby rooms as a notable side effect. Can't drown out the broadcast but makes it difficult to listen to.

Another small side effect is damaging sensitive electronics, don't even need to touch them or have the sparks arcing to them, within say 50cm of it, they can start displaying garbage or switching off. Optical mice seem to do this at even greater distances :/
