I posted a thread a while back expressing my interest in a seamaster but after great deal of thought I've decided to look for something a little different and cheaper due to myself trying to get on the property ladder  and I really like the Rado Original either the Classic or the Diver link but are these watches worth the £750 asking price? Do they come anywhere near the omega quality or are the overpriced? Another consideration was an Oris Chronometer but again I'm unsure about the quality?

Second hand is just something I've not considered. If I knew of someone that was selling then yes I would consider it but its not really an option for me to search for one.

Very few watches are actually worth the asking price. A £750 watch probably leaves the factory at £300 or so, the rest is profit for the importer and retailer. Ask for a good discount.

Personally, the "retro" Rado models leave me cold. Nothing wrong with them, I just don't like the styling. Oris are an honest brand, and reasonable value.

The only "expensive" watch I'd consider paying retail for is a Rolex, because the resale value is good. If you never intend to sell the watch, this doesn't matter as much.

I've got about 70 watches, and I've only paid full retail for a couple of them. The rest have been bought in sales (TAG Targa Floria - half price), on eBay (Rolex sub, Ulysse Nardin 1840, several Citizen and Seiko models, and loads of vintage stuff), or from "trade" aquaintances (Zenith Chronomaster Moon, Ulysse Nardin GMT).

Secondhand is definately the way to go, as long as you can trust the seller. Try looking in independant jewellers, as they sometimes have secondhand watches.

I have bought many watches 2nd hand and as such lost very little when selling on, as you say only a few makes hold their "new" value, Rolex and Panerai do and an Omega bought at standard discount should hold it's value failry well, the likes of Tag,Rado,Cartier suffer really badly

Must say Im not really a watch snob, and as I have pretty thin wrists I find bracelet watches look a tad ridiculous on me, so I thought this one was very nice:
