I heard they might be able to get 2 more out the goverment.

When was that? There was originally meant to be 12 then it was cut to 8, then the beginning of this year it was cut to 6 with a possibility of 2 more.

So 6 replacing 12 ships, well done Gordon Brown...

I read something about the Royal Navy having to moth ball half the fleet for costs reasons in exchange the navy would get the other 2 type 45 as well as the 2 new aircraft carriers.

Ah ok, I heard something about mothballing half the fleet but didn't realise it was in return for the extra two ships.

Lower RCS is but one consideration for the RAF who don't seem to have too much of a problem hanging unstealthy things off the Typhoon, so no i think i attach as much importance as needed.

Lower RCS is useful, like lower IR signature is useful, being the same colour as the background is useful, having the range to make it to the target and back is useful, being able to carry the correct weapons etc etc.

Its just one aspect of a sucessful aircraft and it may not even be the most important.

Exactly, to maintain the F-22's levels of stealth they have had to sacrifice in other areas, compared to the typhoon and many other aircraft the payload that an F-22 can carry is small as it's all stored in internal bays on rail systems iirc.

Stealth is one of a number of ways that fighter jets can avoid getting shot down, speed and manouverability is another, which is why the tornado ground attack variant is still on of the best around as on the deck it's quicker than any other fighter jet (unless something is now quicker, i know the tornado was the fastest a while ago).

As for the tornados bieng old well if it works it doesn't matter if what the Us are saying now is true then the B-52 will have been in service almost a century by the time it's due to be replaced which the Us reckon is at least 2040.

At the end of the day the thing is is that weather the F-22 is vastly superior to the Typhoon is irrelevant the only thing that was in any way necessary was that both jets could outperform the previous generation in almost every way, in tests the US were sending one or two F-22's up against 5 F-15's in senarios and from bit's i've read from pilots of the F-15's in multiple exercises the F-15's pilots said that they never actually saw the F-22 one saw the shadow of it after it had just wiped out the 5 F-15's, the Typhoon has a similar albeit slightly reduced ability against the best aircraft of the previous generation.

Russians trying to rattle the saber imo

Definately, i tihnk they are getting over confident about there ever growing economy so now they think they can try and take on the likes of America and Britain. Putin is now standing up against Bush whereas before he would do as he was told like a russian bitch!

Britain doesnt share a border with Russia so these aircraft must have been well known if NATO still exists.
Personally I dont think they should get that far but I presume they were always in the sights of friendly forces so considered no threat at all.

I hope we dont return to a cold war because these aircraft straying over borders can turn serious. In the past a 747 class passenger plane was shot down by the russians after crossing the border (bad navigation pre gps) and all were lost- the russians thought it was a surveilance plane

F-15e - about 2/5 of british air space defence is by americans
