Hi,

Don't really come into GD that often but i guess this thread belongs here, Basically I am currently in the process of applying to the RAF as a Weapons System Officer (1st Choice) or an Air Traffic Control Officer (2nd Choice), now i have my first interview on the 18th of June and was wondering if anyone on here is currently serving in the RAF or has experience of the interview process, as it's quite different from my current job role as an FA.

theres a forced thread if you have a search. Scrub up on your current affairs and indepth knowledge about your roles. If you dont get a commision dont go and commit yourself to RAF anyway, theres faster promotions on offer in the navy, or try the SNCO Air Traffic the RAF has on offer.
 
There are quite a few RAF/Air force servers here afaik. Do a search in the meantime, but a few should respond here. :)
 
Years ago a friend of mine had interview for the RAF. He didn't get in but told me that at interview he made mistake of trying to bluff them a little. He told them he liked to work at cars as a hobby thinking this was a smart thing to do, however, he was stumped when an interviewer asked him to explain how the internal combustion engine worked.

Moral of story is think before you give an answer and don't try and fool them!
 
Current affairs, in the UK and world. This almost caught me out, as i spent a lot of time reading up on world affairs but not much on uk affiars. Read up on both roles so you know them inside out! Use the website, it is your friend. The AFCO interview is easier compared to the one at cranwell, but it's still tough if you aren't prepared. I went through the scholarship scheme for a-levels. Tried applying for scholarship for being a pilot. Unfortunately my hearing wasn't up to scratch. Ah well.

He couldn't explain how an internal combustion engine worked....? I was expecting you to say they asked him something difficult.

Moral of the story is that your friend wasn't clever enough to carry on bluffing. Chances of an admin officer knowing how a combustion engine works are slim. Although saying that it is a pretty simple idea the combustion engine. Piston goes up fuel goes in piston comes down spark plug sparks pushed piston up again.

Hi, yes this is the interview at AFCO i've already had the presentation this is the one before the 4 days at cranwell.

If you could post some questions i would be very grateful

Or he could have said straight away that he didn't know.. would have given a better impression really.

The first half of the interview is all about you, so those questions should be pretty easy enough. :p They'll want to know about any activities in and outside school, your family life etc.

Second part they'll want to know what you know about them.

You'll need to know about...


  • UN and NATO. So for example what NATOs purpose is, how many members it has. Also look at ISAF and what it does.


  • RAFs worldwide bases/current operations (Falklands, Ascension Islands etc).


  • RAFs aircraft, and what bases they are stationed at. As a WSO they'll probably ask you about the Tornado GR4 (stationed at Marham & Lossiemouth) or Nimrod MR2/R1 (stationed at Kinloss & Waddington). But they'll probably want you to list all their aircraft (current and future).


  • RAF history and command structure.



  • Officer duties.

The majority of the above can be found the RAF website and wikipedia. And as Zefan said, check out thestudentroom forums and wiki, it's a great resource.
