RAF low fly zone....

Wow, that sounds like a great day out, I'd love to do that.

You've got some crackers there - I especially love the Tornado F3 (1+2) with con trails and the shot of the Tornado GR4 coming towards you is brilliant.

Well done.

It was well worth doing but it's a long day. About 150 miles for me to get there and you need to be there and in place by 9am. The climb up is a challenge, 250-300 feet at angle more than a 50 degrees (and increasing). The only way is to go in a zig zag up as it's too steep to do straight up. It was 11c at the car park, add to that the extra height and windchill it gets cold up there and the trip down is even worse. Made worse when I fell and landed on my ass soaking my jeans straight through shortly after watching two Tornados go through the Valley togeather (why didn't I stay 15 minutes longer!!! :( )

The light was pretty aweful and spent the day on ISO 800 to 1600 which was a shame but we had a good number of aircraft come through (the Lakes had bad weather so I think some diverted to Snowdonia).

Some very nice photos and a really interesting location. I bet its sooooooo loud in there as well

That looks like an awesome day out, good pics too mate :)

Snowdonia is great for seeing planes close up, a few years ago i walked up Snowdon via Crob Goch (a great experience) we got to the summit of Snowdon and a Tornado came virtually right at us then went into a vertical climb over the summit :D

I LOVE it up there :P I used to spend a lot of time at my grandparents in Bala.

The RAF use the lake there to practise bomb runs, so you get a whole host of large aircraft practising low level bombing runs, using the town as the target :)

Somewhere I've always wanted to go...
Bit far for me though :(

Looks great. :D *I miss the military aircraft flying over :(*

Conditions look - well normal summer for Snowdonia tbh. ;)

Just one little correction for you...
It's not a Harrier GR10 - it's a T.10 ;)

nice shots :)

why do you have to be there at 9? or is that just when most flights are?
also where abouts did you shoot from?

looks like an interesting place to visit sometime :)

Thanks guys!

The noise level wasn't bad at all on the slopes but in the valley is was a tad loud! There was a construction team repairing the road in the valley, poor souls must be near a breakdown with the RAF straifing (sp?) them all day!

Cheers for that, I'll change that.

Stay over, you could get a B&B for £35 per night.

They usually fly from about 9:15am on to about 5:30pm, although it tails off in the afternoon.

These were shot from Dinas.

great shots again dude!!! Keep em coming :D

Cheers but that is the lot from me for a while, back at work on Monday and with all the flying done in the weekdays I won't get a chance to shoot anymore for a while. :(

Did anyone use to watch that documentary folloing RAF recruits? I'm sure it was on ITV. Can't remember the name of the show, but they regularly had to fly down that valley, was awesome seeing the in-cockpit footage

Nice shots and after looking at them earlier what did the RAF do out my window when my camera wasn't at hand? You guessed it a 9 plane Tornado diamond formation fly by. Think they are practicing for the Leuchars air show thats coming up soon and missed the shot grrrr

Cheers guys!

I'm not sure, I'd guess at 300MPH.

Nice shots.

Quick question, any issues with damp and cameras up a mountain like that?, I have a 350D which arent waterproof and would like to have a go at something like this myself.

Oh, and good job it wasnt greece or you might be looking at spending some time with Bubba ;)

Although it was raining in the next valley I didn't have any rain where I was. There was damp in the air (as you can see from the Tornado's wingtips) but nothing to worry about. I had my Lowepro all weather bag with me in case it got too bad.

You do spend a large proportion of the time waiting for the jets so you could put your camera into a bag as long as you can get it out very quickly (you have less than 10 seconds from the first sign that a jet is inbound to stand up, position yourself and to get the jet in the frame).

I'd be more worried about slipping on the rocks and throwing your camera off the edge than the damp :p

Thanks Gord.
