Spend a rather disastrous day out yesterday. Nothing was going to plan but I did get a first, a Tornado GR4 from RAF Marham with it's wings back low level....

The light was pretty aweful so that was the best shot I got of him (I really do need a 300 f/4 L IS now).

There are a couple more on my site from the day....

Cheers guys.

I'm suprised you picked that photo. The Tornado looks fantastic in it but what stopped me adding that one as well was the background. If it had been taken in one of the few sunny periods it would have been one of my better photographs.

looks like you found a great spot there and some cool pics, shame about the weather.

Where is the location if you dont mind me asking?

I actually like the contrast of the bright plane infront of the dull background.

Really highlights how awesome these things look! :)

Sorry for the late reply I was involved in a car accident yesteday. Thankfully I'm fine (as was the other party) but it's left me quite a few things to sort this weekend. :(

I don't want to start to give exact information on the location as virtually all the locations are on either private or farm land. You only can use them by the good grace of the owners and many of them have expressed concern about numbers of people using the land and also the locations being on the Internet.

The location is in Wales and with a bit of research you will find that locations can be found (including GPS references!). My hope is if you do want to try this type of photography that by researching it first you will have an understanding on the what you should do, what you shouldn't, the politics and also when not to post a picture of something you may have seen.

Sorry if that sounds like I'm being an arse.

That one with the wings back must have been trekking!

You would think so but in fact he was just posing :D Having the wings forward is a better config for low level that's why wings back is so rare.

Excellent photo. The IS part of the lens wont help with panning shots though... but you probably know that. ;)

IS is a big debate in the avaition world. I know 300 f/2.8 IS users who refuse to use IS. Personally I use it but the reason I want the 300 f/4 is the f/4. My 100-400 is good but often I wish I had f/4 or better.

I'm pretty sure he shoots with a 100 - 400 L IS

and IS has an option two which is designed for panning.

Correct!

You also get prop aircraft and when you are using 1/125s at 300+ mm the IS really helps.

I work at Marham, so can see them close up and very low level!
Some days I hope its foggy just so they won't fly at all :)

If you happen to know who was flying ZA461 on the 16th pass on my thanks for the passes. He saved what was without doubt my worse day low leveling.

In fact II and IX squadrons have given me few good photos this year.

I am intrigued at this. :o Without going into detail etc. why would you see things that photographs of should not be posted on the net? It is a public(ish) area so why would there be those things, secret or accidental/stupid?

You frequently get things flown on aircraft before they are public knowledge...

Like the TIALD pods on ther Tonka's in 1990/early 91 - tested very radpidly as they wanted them out in the gulf.

Sadly there's also the possibilities of accidents or failures when out and about.

Spot on.

All the RAF training areas are publicily accessable (even the ranges as long as they aren't actually dropping weapons at that time! :D ). They don't have the luxury the USAF have to close off huge sections of land to train privately on and arrest anyone with a camera for "home land security" reasons. This means that if they want to test a new weapon or a new pod (something that has a lot of focus with close air support in Iraq / 'stan) they have to do it in public. Publicising this on the internet isn't a good thing.

I don't want to say too much but information from UK aviation web sites has appeared in newspapers in Afghanistan. Our people over there don't need any more things to worry about.

Touching wood; not seen an accident or failure at low level but of course things like bird strikes are very real risks.
