Rafa signs new deal

I'm very pleased with this, as he has done a good job. The biggest problem for me is the squad depth if Torres or Gerrard are out the replacements aren't good enough to get a result.

So hopefully he will get a good transfer budget and get some quality players in.

Liverpool have a poor squad in my opinion, and other then 3/4 good players are full of very average players.

I don't follow Liverpool much, but I know some guy left so Rafa will have more control over Transfers ! maybe this will be a good thing ? or will Rafa bring in lots of useless players ?

I find the strength in depth argument a poor one. If you look at Manu's replacements whenever they get a game the manu fans spend most of the game moaning about just how crap said players are.

They moan just as much about the players that come in as replacements as liverpool fans.

Its about buying players that can do more than one job. Thats Rafa's job to find players so the whole team doesn't fall on it's backside when one or both of torres or gerrard is out.

Up front Man U have Berbatov, Rooney and Tevez and arguably Ronaldo who are all £25m+. If you're moaning about that you may as well give up watching football. Liverpool have Torres, which I hope will be bolstered over the summer.

Can't believe the UTD fans celebrating this contract. Rafa has take them to 2 ECL finals in such a short time, compared to UTD winning two European cups in my life time (same as Nottingham Forest), and I'm getting on a bit ;)

A team can win the champions league by winning ~1 group game and drawing the other ~12 games. That's perfect for Rafa's teams, but not very suitable for the league which is what Liverpool really want to start winning over the next 6 seasons.
His main problem will be trying to fix Gerrard into a more offensive league side. He needs to buy at least a 2nd strike, but a top striker won't be happy sitting on the bench until Torres pulls a muscle. However if he plays two strikers does he then have to move Gerrard to the left/right of midfield like he has done in the past?

They have Rooney, Tevez and Berbatov. Read the next posts on Manu games you will see more than half the fans don't like Berba and a lot will now be happy to see tevez go rather than spend more oney on him.

Perhaps get Owen in and cover for Torres, which is what I was thinking/ some were hoping before Keane, (although I didn't argue against keane). I think Owen would relish the chance of being back at Liverpool, even 50% bench warming and would play well with Gerrard. He only left because he wanted CL football lol.
Downside is that they then have 2 strikers that have both struggled with injuries.
Liverpool are only a step away from a title now, this year has more positives towards next year than negatives.
I still get the impression small teams go to Anfield like its a cup final, then go to Old Trafford already beaten. Utd really arn't as good as the hype. To think this Utd team has been touted as the best ever. The stand-out best players in the world are all at other clubs and perform on big occasions.

Nah I'd never get Owen. I think he can score goals that are setup for him, but he doesn't do anything for a team. He's way too injury prone, lacks creativity and simply isn't dynamic enough for the way we play.

We need someone who is strong and works hard, coupled with a desire to win and take responsability when other big players arn't availible.

You wont get that from Owen. He'd just get in the way of Gerrard and Torres like Keane did.

Well at the moment, today, I think its good news that Rafa has signed. Now if the americans would just hop off I would be even happier.

I'm not going to get into the debate about man utd and Liverpool because its a pointless argument. Each era has a great dominating team, for the last while its been Utd, before that when they hadnt won for 26 years it was other teams. Its all circles and roundabouts and in time another team will come in and dominate an era so its pretty pointless to argue about it.

On the issue of strike partners for Torres, I know this might be a bit off the scale, but I have often wondered about Thierry Henry. He has made it clear that he would fancy a return to the premiership to be closer to his kid. I know he isnt the Henry of old, but he would still net you a fair amount of goals a season. The cost to get him probably wouldnt be too bad now. He is football savvy, would still scare defenders and at 31 wouldnt mind being the "sidekick" to a superstar rather than the superstar himself. Just my thoughts.

its just as much that as Rafa is utterly happy to see the league go completely uncontended by resting players around CL games, playing ridiculous squads and saving Torres for CL games, if Rafa actually tried to win the league and balanced his resting for league games aswell as CL games he'd have done worse in the league. Though in saying that, is it so bad he sacrifices one to get the other, rather than not win either? I don't know.
