Rage - anyone else initially unimpressed?

Wouldn't make sense for rage to have bad textures since one of the strengths of the engine is the fact that it can use literally tens of gigs of textures in any given scene with the "virtual texture" tech it has. One of the scenes they showed off from what i can remember had over a hundred gigs of textures in a scene.

That being said its id software, theyve not produced anything outstanding in a decade now.

some pretty bad floor textures

Looking at the game it really looks like a typical id game, depressing colour scheme, human characters that look a bit "off" with a weird sheen to their skin. Im sure the multiplayer will be the same tired crap theyve been hawking since the mid 90's.

Just seems they could do so much more but they seem to always fall back on certain elements that make ther games have a "samey" look and feel to them.

The enemy tossing fireballs at the start of this might as well be the imp from doom 3, even throws them right handed..

Just after 0:30 in that video - they 'invented the genre with Wolfenstein', did they? I'd grant that they really made the genre popular with that one, but even if you discount the older games like Battlezone, it's still a bit arrogant when you recall games like Catacomb & Hovertank.

I'm actually looking forward to it, textures don't really bother me as long as they're good, it's the animation and atmostphere which sets the game for me in terms of graphics.

but as lon as they storyline is their and the gameplay is good and not repetetive I'll enjoy it.

i doubt it will end up much better looking than borderlines, they make it sound like you can explore but only to a certain extend, which to devs basicly means walls are everywhere and its not a truly "open" world

Lol "ID Software presents A New Vision".

So if you take Borderlands and Fallout and make it an FPS, thats a new idea, yes?

That is exactly what I thought! Seems very much like Borderlands, and the A in RAGE looks like a similar design to the Borderlands symbol too! Add the 'fallout' background to it and you have this! :P

I hope you realize that 'A' is an icon synonymous with anarchy.

2009 trailer with recycled spiderbot from doom 3...

Human characters in it looks pretty meh to say the least.

Above is the 2010 trailer, still has no release date apparently but the way they've released 2 trailers its like they expected to to be done sometime that year.

Yeah unimpressed but then how could I not be given anything made to run on the out of date hardware in the 360 or ps3. The sooner they update the consoles hardware the better. Sadly it seems most game producers will only code for consoles now. They give excuses like piracy even tho consoles actually have worse piracy and/or 2nd hand game lending or even shops selling pre-owned games hurts producers. Sure you have a fixed set of hardware to work with on consoles but its a fixed crap level of hardware. Look at the 360 its got only 512mb of memory and is shared with gpu which is the equilavent of a ATI Radeon X1900. I mean jeeze the console came out in early 2005 and at the time was a good spec but hello its 2011 and this 6 year old now piece of junk needs replacing. Well microsoft have made a statement that they are extending 360 life an extra 5 years as of 2011 so expect more substandard games to be released and gaming technology to be choked until at least 2016 unless some nice new companies decide to push pc gaming again and take lead position. Just think the 360 will be 9 years old by the time they replace it. 9 years!!! yikes!!!

:D

I remember Carmack talking about it 2008, suggesting that it wouldn't be too much longer, and when there was no release in 2009 I did start to wonder when would it finally be on the horizon. Now along side Bethesda, hopefully triple A titles will take a less time to produce. I know it's very easy for me to sit in my comfy chair and 'want it done asap' but this title has been a while coming. When Doom 3 came out I was 30, by the time Rage ships I'll be nearly 38.

You sure? Im watching some vids and the enemies seem to stay there.

Just after your in game character talks to (is it 'Crazy Joe') you fight a few mutants just next to where your buggy is. I saw at least one of them there dissolve. I'm not sure about all the others in the videos though. :)

When I saw this scene from trailer on Rage site I immediately through of a prisoner from Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. But can't find any images on the web to compare.

This vid they don't seem to dissolve in

That was one of the many complaints about doom 3, everything seemed too sterile with the way the enemies burned up. Hopefully they stay around for at least a while.
